Glows in Series?
ARe the glows in a 78 300SD in series?
If the first plug isn't working then none will work? Checked plugs today with a multi-meter and the #2 plug isn't powering up-so to speak. My mech friend brought over a tool that hooks to the POS on the battery and he checked the plugs. If they were good, the tool lit up, and #2 didn't light up no matter how he checked it. Does that mean that 2-5 aren't working if they are in series? Thanks! G

I'm pretty sure they are parallel. In fact, I think all turbo engines are parallel. The giveaway is whether there are heavy squiggly wires going from one plug to the next. I believe you probably have separate wires going to each plug. My #2 went out on my 79sd a few weeks ago and starting was hard.

No, I don't have the squigglies anymore. PO had those replaced.
I have separates going to each plug. Well, since it's #2 and not #5, I'll change it out tomorrow (if the weather doesn't change it mins and do something dumb, like snow-ssshhhhhh) and see if that's the big problem. Friend was going to check relay but he had to go make pizza for delivery and I needed to head out for home. Hope that's the problem, cross things for me??

hooked in parallel.
To test the glow plugs take a DVOM and measure the resistance across the top where the threads are and the body of the glow plug. The resistance should be .9 or less. To check the relay, when you crank the car you should click in the relay.

"HEAR" a click in the relay, possibly.

Mine hasn't ever made that click.
The 300D does, but not my car or the 81. So I changed out the #2 and what a PITA! My hands are not tiny and there isn't a whole lot of room to work with tools down there. Will know tomorrow morning if it helps! Thanks!

Except it's NEVER clicked.
EVER. I've had it 4 years now and no matter how long the key is left in glow position after the light goes off it doesn't give that clicky clunky sound like the 300D gives.

By "click" they mean if you put your ear in the vicinity of the relay while someone else turns the key, you can hear it. I have never heard it from the seat.

You can also tell by the brightness of the dome light. Leave the door open, glow, and watch the dome light. If it does not dim, the relay could be having problems, unless two or more GP's are burned out.

Those ratcheting box-end wrenches help alot, I think they're called gear wrenches. Also I've read removing the injector lines helps a lot, but I've never removed all of them at once, so I don't know if its quicker to do all that and then have an easier time with the plugs or just fight your way to the plugs.

Luckily I have a set of the ratcheting wrenches. 7mm to 13mm.
Just not much room. I was looking at removing a couple injector lines but decided that I could just do more damage that way! Left them on and whished I had smaller hands.

I have found that a 1/4" 12mm deep socket with one of those "sloppy" (wiggly) extendo works for most of them.
