Nine that's right, nine degrees this morning:eek:! Gave Rudy a full glow cycle, turned the key off then on and "Houston we have ignition" You could tell when the afterglow cut out as the engine ran rough for a minute after the plugs shut off, but we were going...

9 does sound pretty exteme for where you are, though.
I haven't started mine since...eek, Monday maybe? I am going to wait until this afternoon when it is supposed to be 12 :rolleyes:
I am kind of tempted to see if it would start..I think it would, if the fuel wasn't gelled. I can guarantee it wouldn't be pleasant though!

12 degrees now in Atlanta. Heading out to start the '81 300SD in a few minutes. Wish me luck.

Two hours later - it fired up first time just like in cold weather. Had no power backing out of the garage and I had to put it into Park to make it rev. But then headed down the driveway and out onto the street and it rev'd fine. So I am satisfied with the answer about no/low power when it is cold - diesels run better hot and will not have much power until they warm up.

Have done nothing to improve crankability except have valves adjusted and added 5w30 oil. Really happy. Pretty good for 255,000 miles car.

12 here, fired on first try.

We had about that same 9F here this AM, maybe a couple degrees colder. It felt to me like I was at about the lower temp limit for starting.....cranked for probably 8-10seconds straight and nothing. Had my foot on the floor during the last few seconds. Let it sit a few seconds, then ran another glow cycle and then started on idle with about 2-3seconds of cranking.

I had it plugged in last night too and somehow figured the start would be easier this AM......wondering if maybe my block heater isn't working. Is the block heater power line fused? I wonder if maybe I'm not getting any juice to the heater?

The easiest check would be to look at your temp gauge before you start. If the block heater is working, it will register on the temp gauge as warmer than 40.

4 degrees this morning when I gave it a go at 8:15. Almost cranked but no go. AAA on the way.

We're in Belleville, IL, btw. Across the river from St. Louis.

0 degrees here and not about to punish the 82 240 for no reason. It has been on the block heater all night and will start no problem.

I got her started with propane.

-2F this morning, gave it a 15 second glow and it fired right up with about 4 seconds of cranking :D

how many of you had it plugged in though?

my old girl with all of her mile's surprised me when it started up, no block heater, 1 glow plug cycle (very old plugs too) in 8F the other night up in the mountains of pa :D. She sure did chug along for 1minute though before the idle settled out. (oh this wasn't on diesel you can get at the pump either)

The truck said -11F!

It started for about 30 seconds but then would die as the fuel was far too thick even with Diesel 911 and cetane booster.
