smoking after overfuel @ startup

can fuel collect in the exhaust system and cause smoking after startup with partial throttle and numerous attemtps?

whats the longest this should last?

All the exhaust from this engine goes through the 85 california catalyst.
Engine does not normally smoke.

Black soot is collecting on the ground, smoke is gray-ish and the car ran very rough once it was started.

normal maintenance has been accomplished.

Some of it is in the exhaust.......but, a lot of it is in the cylinders.

Yes, you'll need to burn it off as the engine heats up.

The time it takes is dependent on how long you cranked it without a start. Could be up to 15 minutes to fully clear if there's a lot of fuel in there and the engine is very cold.

Thanks Brian.

Not to be an alarmist, but I was primarily concerned b/c it was smoking for so long and heavily. It did eventually burn off and the stumbling evened out.

Is fuel pooling in the cylinders and PCs perhaps the cause of failed PCs?
