If you are lucky the seals will swell with synthetic and the leaks will get better.

Not true. My oil leaks went to almost zero when I switched to Mobil1.
When I used to make several drips wherever I parked for more than a few hours, I now drip nothing. Just a little seepage from the front main seal and injection pump mount.

Yet another reason to use synthetics. I'm glad your leaks stopped.

I just switched to (5w40) M1 in my CD and Rotella in my TD this weekend. I would have put M1 in both but I could only find 8 quarts locally.

I bought the Rotella in gallon jugs for $19.00 each at Wal-Mart ($5.77 if bought in quarts).

The M1 was $7.99 per quart at Advance.

I think I'll be using the Rotella Syn 5w40 in the future.

Hey Lance, do you keep using 5w40 during the summer?

I have had several vehicles that leaked a little more on synthetic than with dino oil after the first change. ALL of them went to leaking less or none after a few weeks. I use whatever 5W-40 synthetic (diesel rated of course) that is cheapest at the time. I may use Delvac 1 or M1 TD if it is no more than about a dollar extra per quart (especially in the winter) because it is a slightly better oil. You can nit pick brands, but ANY 5W-40 synthetic is better than the best oil from '85. I use 5W-40 all year around.

I paid $22 a gallon for the 5w40 Mobil 1 TDT oil. So $44 for the oil change with a quart left over for top offs. I can't remember what I paid for the filter as I bought 3 the last time I placed an order. I'm sure it was less than $16 though.

Where on earth did you buy M1 for $22 a gallon? Its about DOUBLE that here!

$22 a Gal Wal Mart. The dino's 15W-40 are about $12 a gallon and the syn 5W-40 are about $21. I use the synthetic (Rotella Blue Bottle). Change it every 5K.

Oh.. Make sure you rotate the tires.... learned the hard way....

I use dino 15W-40 (Delvac 1300) in the motorcycle. and Wally World synthetic 5W-30 in the Ford Explorer V6 SOHC with 200K on the engine....

It was on sale at Joe's sporting goods. Unfortunately they are only in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Dave (GSXR) was stocking up on it at the time.

I change my oil once a year, whether it needs it or not. I actually drive about 10,000 miles a year and oil analysis has show that the TBN and soot is fine. Others with OM60x engines are finding the same thing. It is obviously not the same for the 617.

I change my oil hot, but not often. It is a waste of time and money.

Let the flaming begin.

By 10k the oil in a 617 would be more like a thick sooty syrup.

I get the Rotella Syn for $19 a gallon, so thats fine with me. I wouldn't use M1 even if it was on sale.

With my current driving amounts I only change my oil maybe twice a year. I haven't even filled up my car since Christmas Day! And I'm only a little under half a tank!

Not driving much saves a lot of $$.....
