My 84 300 sd had the same problem. Figured out that the sending unit connector plug on top of the tank was worn from 20 years of vibration. Cleaned both ends real good and slightly bent the male prong so there was always tension in the plug. Works perfect.

I'm going to contact Ray next time I hit Nawlins. I'll try to plan a small GTG then. Although, nobody has been interested in the others I've tried to get going.
