You got it. The first nut, the smaller one, is part of the supply hose. You'll want to remove that to get the screen out. The other one, the big one (46mm), is the tank screen. Make sure you tank is as empty as possible, and then have some buckets ready to catch the leftover fuel when you pull the supply line off.

If you want to replace that supply hose with a new hose you can fix it to use a regular fuel hose.
You can grind or file off the crimped metal coller that clamps the hose on. After you remove the hose and collar you will find a regular hose jag underneath. Just cut your new fuel hose to the correct length and replace the crimped collar with a hose clamp.

Have you tried biocide yet?
Usually you can kill the bacteria and it will come through the filters and you are good to go. In thirty old mb I have never had to remove a screen yet.

i've put almost 2500 miles on this car since i got it and had to replace the primary fuel filter 5 or 6 times.
last week it boged down again and i thought it needed another filter. when i got it home and checked the filter it was empty. i unhooked the supply hose from it and fuel just barley driped out. i shot 25 psi. air back through the lines and now it's fine. for how long? i did'ent see a nut that big on the line under the car "46 mm" i'll have to get it up on a hoist again and take a second look. thankyou all. jason |

If you have a hoist it's an easy job!
You might want to consider biodiesel-proofing the fuel system while it's up in the air: When you order a new screen, try and get a biodiesel-safe o-ring for it. Also consider replacing the rubber hoses with biodiesel safe ones(GM fuel injection lines are lined with a blue plastic that's biodiesel safe, IIRC)

Be careful with compressed air.You can blow out vent line.Run her low on fuel or drain it and you can reuse it after filtering with cheese cloth. You can clean screen with tooth brush.I took a razor and cut the top portion out.I run 3 primaries.

The 46mm "nut" is actually the flange that screws into the bottom of the tank. I removed mine by using a cheap 3/4 dr. socket set from Harbor Freight. You will need to raise the rear of the car and have no weight on the right rear wheel to get enough access. Even then, it's a tight squeeze.
Drain the tank by using the no fuss method. Pinch the return hose with a set of hemostats or locking vise grips. Remove from the hard line and attach, using a barbed union, a length of hose to run to your fuel can. Release the hemostats and let 'er drain. When one is full, pinch it again and go to the next can. No mess and no fuel bath.

You might find like me,that the fuel line is so tight, that the screen comes out with it.
