electrical gremlins in 1972 220 d

I am having some trouble getting the electrical system in my 1972 220d up to snuff. I have replaced engine grounding cable, voltage regulator and alternator with new parts. The parts have been checked out by a very good mechanic and have been determined to be good. The alternator is a rebuilt Bosch. Anybody have any experience trouble shooting the wiring in these cars? Are there areas we should look at first for possible culprits. Our current hypothesis is that the voltage regulator my not be properly grounded.

Please direct responses to ahershman@bop.gov

Thanks.

Not sure exactly what problems you are having, please be more specific about the problem or symptoms.

Also answers here help everyone on the forum not just the first poster.
