The '87. The 603 is so much smoother and more powerful, really embodies what a Mercedes diesel should be. The only way I'd give up an '87 for a newer M-B diesel is a '98/'99 or CDI.
(unless it were a G or 'Mog, then the '87 goes bye-bye).

who wouldnt want the 3L engine? unless the head is cracked...

Id keep the 87 and veg it for your 70 mile commute. Aside from head issue, its the best MB this side of the 99 E300D turbo. Ofcourse an 87 SDL would be even better ...
