Which one to keep? '87 300D or '92 300D?

Hello!

Both cars in very good condition with extensive maintenance records. '87 is under 170K, '92 is just over 170K.
'87 is white with blue MB-Tex interior. Upgraded door panels with wood and leather inserts, leather steering wheel and shifter.
'92 is smoked silver with palomino MB-Tex. Includes nice futures such as heated front seats and ASD.
I am considering to sell one of them in the near future, but its hard for me to decide which one to keep... So, which one?

Any inputs would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If it were me.......I would keep the 87. The only reasons I can come up with are:
  • 603 engine probably with a #14 head :D
  • blue interior --- palomino is so.......I hate to use this word, but "common"
  • They have about the same mileage but the 87 is older; therefore, the average miles per year is a lot less.

That would be a no brainer for me. Heated seats and ASD, but you are in TX, so it's not nearly as important to you. Why not keep them both? :)

Yeah, I thought about the heated seats....but if I park in the garage, the seats are tolerable here in Memphis.....Plus blue would heat up faster parked outside in the sun than the palomino, right?

They both sound like great cars. Keep the one that has given you the least problems. Or the one that will give you the best return....

My one Palamino and one Pinkamino seats seem to stay cool or cold year round. I would think the blue would stay warmer if the sun were out.

keep the 2.5

i had an '87 for a few years and now have my '92. The only reason I like the '92 is because of the looks and the mpg's. Otherwise, the '87 was the best MB diesel i ever owner. If you've got an '87 with the updated looks, i'd keep it and sell the '92.

Which do you prefer driving?

Put both up for sale and see which one fetches your asking price first.

87 300D

easy enough answer since you can't decide...let fate decide.

Thank you guys for your suggestions and inputs!

1992 300D is fairly new for me (3 weeks old). It was purchased for my dad, who is visiting me for a couple of months. I both it from a different state w/out seeing it in person for a reasonable price. Turns out that car is in good shape. PO owner was clueless about cars in general (but preformed all required maintenance) and told me that there is an electrical problem with the car (cluster gauges not working, battery discharging and clicking sound from relays). He took this to the mechanic, replaced couple of the relays and voltage regulator, new battery - paid big money - not fixed. Then he decides to sell it as is.
It was just a #5 fuse had a bad contact. :) Before driving there to pick it up - I'll already knew the problem - thanks to this forum.

So, since this car is new for me - I will drive it for a couple of months (my dad will use my '87) and then decide which one to keep. My commute to/from work is 70mile every day, so I will calculate my MPG as well and compare it to '87.

Thanks again!

Hmmmm, 70 mile commute would seem to argue in favor of the '92. But then I've been able to get close to 35 mpg on the interstate out of a well-tuned '87.

Sounds like you've got the right idea - drive the new-to-you '92 for a while and see how it compares, before deciding which one to let go.

As far as the long run, a well-maintained low miles one-year-only '87 will always be more of a rare bird than an early 90's 2.5. And for my money, the '87 with virtually no electronics will be easier to work on and maintain, easier to mod, and easier to bypass certain government-mandated features (anyone need a jar of BB's?).;)

GUYS, GUYS..........THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING:eek:.

Keep them both...........and find a 5 cyl. to compliment them.

This is really not a hard choice:D.
