Removing a front fender
 

I need to remove a quarter panel (fender) on the 78 300SD. DRivers side.
What tools do I need and how do I do that?

4.5" diameter angle grinder with abrasive cutoff wheel. Wear a clear plastic full-face shield, and maybe hearing protection.

You could also use a Dremel tool with abrasive cutoff wheels, but it would take you forever.

Is there any chance you are talking about the fender, which is bolted on? (forgive me if you do mean quarter panel).

Ginny, quarter panels usually refer to the rear of the car, including the rear fender.

Considering the recent post about wanting a fender, I sure hope it's a fender and not a quarter panel.

But for future reference, when it comes to cutting a quarter panel off, a cut-off tool is handy for a few spots, but I prefer an air hammer with a panel cutting chisel tip in it. Clean, fast, and it doesn't overheat and warp panels like a cut-off tool can.

You don't have 4 QUARTER Panels?

Okay, maybe I'm wrong I thought all 4 sections from front/back to door
are quarter panels (quarter meaning 4) so maybe the front drivers fender
is what I need.
Idiot with a truck and HUGE mirrors STILL managed to back into the middle of
my front drivers fender.

So how do I get a front drivers fender off?

I would like to use a plasma cutter to take out a quarter panel. Too bad I don't have one nor access to one. :(

I don't know about four quarters, but I once owned an MG, and instead of fenders, it had wings! Nomenclature strikes again! :D

I'll step out of the way now and let someone else handle your question. I'm a W123 guy, so I have little in-depth knowledge of your chassis.

I replaced my front fender with a junkyard one that I was lucky enough to find with the correct color. I started by opening the hood and removing all bolts (I have a 84' 300D it has 7 bolts) from the "lip" that wraps from the fender under the hood. If I remember right (it was three years ago) the trim piece at the bottom of the fender near the door had to be removed to expose two more bolts, mine were rusted and were a bit of a pain to get off. I think there were screws connecting the fender to the front valance or what ever the metal piece is called which runs across the front of the car under the bumper. I don't remember if there was anything to remove associated with the headlight.

I'm on my way in 15 mins or so.
Gotta take a look under my hood and see what size the bolts are.

Oh well, the fender had bondo or something similar on it.
So I left it.

Anyone got a left front fender for a 116?
Silver or light color?
How much?

On any W116 and W123s up to about 1981 or 2 MB extended the bulletproof undercoating up under the fenders. That means you will need either a torch or a heat gun (at least ) to shift front fenders.:mad:
