I am trying to find out where the popping and loose motion is coming from under my 300 sd. I jacked the car up and tryed to compress the spring with an ampro compressor tool. It seems that the spring is attached on the bottom. I thought the spring just sat in there and when I compressed it it would come out. I stopped and felt I needed to ask the experts for help and advise. What holds the spring in place? How do I check? Thanks in advance Jack

I finally got the spring to loosen. Can a big prybar show a bad bushing or bad joint? Help Please

Pretty sure the springs just sit there until you compress them. I'm no expert, but I did my 1983 300SD a few years back. Be sure you are using the correct spring compressor--can be quite dangerous if not.

I'm sure some experts will chime in here.

Seems the most common cause of this noise is from the guide rod bushing. Is the noise more noticeable when breaking? A pry bar will show the loose parts most likely.
