Still No Go...
Thanks o all that have replied.
I am still in the same boat...lost, but the same boat none the less. If anyone else can make suggestions as to testing the pump or anything else I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Dave

RS...nope, no pressure at the lines.
Yes, I pulled off the tranny line at the radiator, with the car running and in gear, I get a dribble...No pressure.
If thats the case...the pump that is, whats my course of action? Thanks again to all. Dave

Unfortunately- pull the transmission out and replace the front pump and/or torque converter. This isn't so hard on the 722.1xx as it all comes off from the front. The hard part is getting the tranny in and out. If you have 300K miles, look forward to a full rebuild.

Update:
hey all,
Ok, I accepted that the trans had to be removed and decided to tow it over to a friends shop. For the power steering, heat and brakes, when I was towing with a strap and engine running I decided to throw it into gear...well, low and behold it started to have a lil power but the trans was clearly slipping badly. As for my question...with the car running, in gear and being towed down the road would the pump end up turning/pumping from the turning of the driveshaft??? Not real sure how to take the fact that the trans is not making pressure at the lines, shifts into gear but when towed down the road the trans did more than simply sit and spin...lol Please, if you have any ideas at all...I am begging, I dont wanna pull it out unless I have to. Thanks all, Dave

The transmission has a second pump at the rear that will make some pressure when the car is being towed. That's why (unlike most automatics) our cars can be pull started.
I think you'll still be at least replacing the front pump, or just springing for a full rebuild. Edit: Have you considered a manual conversion? A stick-shift 116 diesel would be hella cool IMO

Another option is a used transmission. Buy a running parts car or a junk yard tranny.

Roger the above comments. The MB trannys have a smaller rear pump. Unfortunately, you may have made your problems worse with the transmission now because you have now been circulating fluid that likely has some metal shavings ( from front pump sheared bits). Also, you may have made the front pump/TC issues worse by grinding things around (now your stator may be involved). You will know better when you open it up, but you had better think about rebuilding that one or finding a good used one.
Rick

Front Pump It Is!!!
Well, its out and on the ground and the converter sheared off the splines so I am looking for a 116.271.03.01 complete trans, front pump and or converter.
Anyone, anyone...lol Thanks, Dave

Not really, after reading through hundreds of posts I believe it is just something that is likely to happen on these cars.
350,000 miles prolly had something to do with it as well.

Superdave-
The "good" news is that the front pump( I presume that's bad too now) and TC are common to many , if not all of the 722.1xx transmissions. Most all of the 70's MBs, the 300D non-turbos and the 240D can donate what you are looking for ( I got mine from a '77 280SE) . But you will need to think about rebuilding what you have and cleaning it out. Good luck with that... BTW way you are looking for (the complete transmission) is a 722.120 which is what the W116 300SD had. Oh, and if you have a chance, can you post a picture of the carnage so Kerry can see what he has to look forward to someday... Rick (been there)
