Will Axle Replacement Affect Alignment?

I plan on replacing the axle boots on my 1979 300SD W116. They are cracking and overdue for replacement. Will removal and reinstallation of the axles affect the alignment? I am hoping I won't need to add a rear alignment to the bill.

I plan on removing the axles and possibly sending them in to CVJ for rebooting. I think they charge $200 total including parts and labor, less shipping? I want to swap sides on the axles for even wear. I will probably replace the differential side and pinion seals while the axles are out. I will also drain the fluid and replace with synthetic.

I know I will probably be into this about $400 for rebooting when it is all done. But it should last another 30 years unless the metal components wear out. If I reboot before contaminants enter I don't think this is likely.

I also have a transmission service on my list (drain fluid, replace filter and pan gasket, replace fluid lines, adjust anything that needs it--all preventative maintenance) as well as replacement of all 4 brake hoses (previous owner replaced the master cylinder, booster, calipers, pads, and rotors, but did not change the original 1979 hoses!).

Speaking of my '85 300D-T (W123), replacing the axles makes no difference as to how the car sits and so there is no need to do any realignment. AFAIK, that should also apply to your car.

CVJ supplied me with two completely rebuilt axles for $322.19 including shipping and core return shipping. If your axles are undamaged and you simply want new boots (and they agree to do only that) then you should get by cheaper. However, if I were CVJ, I might refuse to do just a re-boot on the grounds that you could have trouble later on and blame them. But I have never asked them about re-booting so maybe I am off base.

If you do that, you will also have the car down while the axles go back and forth and they do the work. If you get rebuilt axles, the car will be down only while you do the axle swap, then you ship your old ones back to them and they return your core charge ($50/axle when I had mine done in 2007). Your call.

Jeremy

I just worry about the rebuilt axles not having the hardened surface as ones that have not been rebuilt. But if the rebuilt axles are hardened like they were when new, then I would be happy with buying rebuilt ones. I'm glad to know replacing them won't affect alignment.

CVJ does not grind off the hardening and is very picky about accepting cores. Whether some of the other rebuilders are that careful is your risk to take.

There is always the Chinese axles, but not sure if they make them for the W116. they are like $100.00 a piece.

Haven`t heard anything bad about them yet.

They don't have the oil return threads on the end of the axles.

That's the only negative thing I can say... (I went with the Chinese option myself recently, going to install them when I'm not swamped)

That is good to know. Maybe I will go with some rebuilt ones from CVJ if they have the hardening. I'd rather pay the extra money for some that have not had the hardening removed.
