I was all amped up to buy a 230E euro, manual transmission, and what the buyer described as 15" Bundts. I asked for closeups of the wheels/tires before driving the 3+ hours to haul it home, and sure enough, they were 14" tires. She was obviously measuring from lip to lip on the rims, w/o even looking at the tires.

This is why around 2000-2001 the FBI required MB and other makes to present proof of ownership (title, registeration card) before ordering a new key(s). Too many cars ended up in the hands of pissed off husbands, wives, lovers, queers, ******s etc.
The best example I ever saw was at an Isuzu dealership in Arlington, Va. In the late 90's vehicles came up missing. It turned out a lot jockey would have the parts room cut a new key (they were Ford style, double cut) because the "original set was missing" . Most of the vehicles were never recovered. An old high school buddy had a '63 Galaxie 500 XL ragtop. Well many moons later he found one down in Florida. Yes it's in great shape, etc etc. He called me on the phone and said he was taking a road trip, borrowed a trailer and would call upon his return. I called him several days later and asked about the car. After he saw the rotted floor pans that was enough. Needless to say, the car stayed in Florida. Alan

strelnik,
frankly, i doubt your answer is correct at least as regards the case i was talking about. i cannot imagine that anyone in the MD/federal government was "protecting" a fourth-rate, ex-convict, dopehead, sneak thief, clumsy forger and (at least) four-time loser for any other reason than STUPIDITY & "PC-ness" gone wild. (fyi, according to a ruling of the USSC, there is NO "right of privacy recognized, under law" to commit a felony or theft and ALL states are required under the US Constitution to cooperate on such matters.) also, the NUTJOB, socialist, city/county/state government of MD intentionally protects illegal aliens from prosecution & "has been known to" actually HIDE persons, who were wanted by federal authorities for felonies, to assure that they were NOT prosecuted for their crimes. further, the MD state government has funded Casa de Maryland (which "counsels" undocumented aliens, including violent MS-13 gangmembers, on how to avoid indictment/prosecution/deportation) AND proclaimed that certain cities/counties in MD are "sanctuary" cities/counties, where law-breakers are actively protected from prosecution. (Montgomery County is the WORST offender.) yours, tn46 |

Also, I find it hard to believe that DMV is your "go to" source as a LEO to find someone. That sounds like a guaranteed "we're sorry for breaking your front door down, Sir. We thought someone else lived here." Stand, I appreciate the fact that you are trying really hard to disguise yourself and blend in here. But, PMs and emails are flying behind the scenes about your reincarnation. Watch yourself. Everyone else is... |

I have four to add-
1. Purchased a diesel Isuzu pup off ebay listed as a daily driver for 1200 bucks, looked in good shape, and we all know how rare those trucks are. Drove 90 miles out and discovered the truck would not start without ether, and had a blown head gasket. Fortunately, I was bringing cash, and just wasted time, instead of money. 2. Purchased a toyota truck off ebay for 900 bucks, again, another daily driver, great shape, ect ect. Flew 1500 miles to pick it up. Owner picks me up in another truck, takes me to the truck I bought, which had a burnt out exhaust valve and was only running on 3 cylinders out of 4, not counting the rust which was extensive on a "rust free" vehicle. I was stuck, and the owner and I worked something out, probably because he thought I might break his nose in short order. Ended up taking the truck anyway, driving back and parting it out. He lowered the price to 500 and threw in a mountain of parts, so I was able to almost recover the cost of my getting the truck in the first place. 3. Purchased a 1981 240D 4-speed off ebay again for 1200 bucks (yes, I know ) made complex arrangements to pick it up, talked to the owner a dozen times or more on the phone, car was over 2000 miles away. I finally show up to pick it up, and 15 minutes out, the owner calls and says it has no clutch slave cylinder, and declined to meet me and explain the situation, and he had the keys. I had already paid half. 3 months later I finally got the car, which was rusted out completely, though reliable enough. Never actually met the owner, who was never around and would not answer his phone when I was there both times, but fortunately, had parked the car at his work, and I got his boss involved. Car cost me over 3 grand all said and done, and was certainly worth about 800 bucks. 4. Purchased a 1981 full size bronco 3-speed off ebay for the final time (yes I know). This one also cost 900 bucks. Was 140 miles away, advertized as rust free, great shape, daily driver. Go to pick it up, and the vehicle was running of 5cyl of the straight 6, was a collection of horrendously bad rust repair, and had a non functional alternator. Repairs included christmas cookie tin screwed over rust holes, license plates on the floor, and my personal favorite, a sweater dipped in concrete and stuffed into the cab corner. Over these repairs it had a new interior carpet. In short, look before you buy, and if you buy off ebay, best to stay local enough you can see it or have someone you know take a look beforehand. I always am honest when I sell a car, but there are numerous people who are not, and that was a hard lesson for me to lastingly learn, each time trusting in personal conversations and getting along well with each owner before being horribly disappointed in the vehicle they were selling. The toyota truck owner was amazing to me, at least the other 3 had some concept of their guilt and were false when we were actually in person (or they knew I was at the car and was pissed over the phone), but the toyota owner literally spent 20 minutes driving me to the truck lying to me about the rust and other condition issues. When we arrived, I guess he could sense my rage, and so capitulated some and made a deal, but to this day, I can never understand why he continued to lie when we were literally about to see the truck, and he would be shown as a liar.
