Well I'm surprised, looked at the '91 350SDL, no rear fog! Why they included it in the 124 and 201 for that year and not the flagship I'll never know, ...

Perhaps. I think the 1991 190E already had the rear fog too. Since it was the last year of the w126 I think they just left it out...?

FWIW my '90 124 does not have the rear fog installed. I don't think the wiring is installed to the rear, but the switch does have the second position and the indicator lamp installed.

Manufactured in March of 1990. Perhaps it started in MY 91?

No bulb or no socket? My 91 SE had working rear fog. If there's a socket, maybe someone used the idle bulb when another bulb blew. Or maybe someone replaced the bulb holder assembly with an older unit.

Perhaps its a wiring issue? There's no open places on the driver's side tail lamp connector with the US side markers hooked up. I still haven't decided how I'll hook mine up, I'll probably get some mbz single connectors and run a wire to the back.

Huh, why did they only put it on one side....? I'll have to check if it works tomorrow.

In that case, ours probably doesn't have it either....its a 1990 model but was manufactured in November '89......I'll have to check it.

The bulb holder is the same with or without the rear fog, just doesn't have the wire and center conductor for the bulb nor the larger 8-pin connector.

The switch is also different, no bulb or holder in it, nor contacts for rear fog, and no rear fog legend on the trim/bezel next to the switch.

I just looked on my SDL, all 8 pins are already used. If the person with the SE that had a factory rear fog could tell me how it was wired I'd much appreciate it.

how hard would it be to add a rear fog to a 87 124?

would I need to upgrade the headlight switch? and then run a wire to the drivers rear tail lamp??

anybody already do this?

I did it to my VW. love having a rear fog, really makes the car stand out in low visiablity situations.

Easier way is to just add the pin (scavenge from another 124 bulb holder) and jumper the new one to the tail-lamp bulb. Then install the bulb when you want it, remove the bulb when you don't.

To add the whole system you need the switch from a '91-'95, a wire to the trunk, jumper power to the new contacts on the switch, and either modify your bulb holder with a contact from another one, or buy a new/used bulb holder for a '91-'95.

Assuming the headlight switch has the appropriate contact, you would need to run a wire back to the left taillight. Then you would need to add a contact to the bulb carrier like I did (the '87 has a "place" in the plastic but no center contact) and you would have to run a wire into that contact, with its own connector since the '87 has only a six-pin connector. You could do the same thing on the right side if you wished (the '92 that I saw in the junkyard was wired to the left side only). The plastic is marked (part of the casting) for a 20W bulb, the same brightness as a brake light or turn signal.

Note that this wiring bypasses the bulb-failure electronics. If the headlight switch lacks the appropriate contact, you can add a switch of your own.

My 91 SE is long gone so it's not available for verification or as a reference. The 126 CD manual only has the 1986 configuration so that's no help either.

8 pins are taken because the left and right license plate bulbs are powered through the left tail light harness. There should be a 3-pin connector conintuing to the license plate lights.

thanks for the replies. I think I will price out a switch from a 91-95 with rear fog. I like OEM style when possible.

I would assume that would be best of both worlds. OEM rear fog engage, and keep the OEM bulb fail intact.

This is real popular on the VW's. Some cars (like mine) had a light on the dash to indicate rear fog, all you needed was the right (Euro) switch.

the long list of mods begins. . .

Gonna be expensive. Try for one from a junkyard. I'd offer you the one from the '92 300E 4-Matic that I was working on but someone butchered that part of the dash getting at something else and broke the shaft off in the knob. Just one of life's little irritations.
