glow plugs on my 1987 300D turbo?

Last night while starting my wife's car,I noticed that the glow plug light does not come on. My wife said it has been like this for a while.

Today, I checked the glow plugs. I know the glow plugs are about 5 years old. With my cheapo meter set to 200 Ohms, plugs 1-5 read between 7.6 & 9. Number 6 read at exactly 1. But I'm actually wondering if my meter is defective (if I connect the two leads together directly, it read 14). Even if it is defective, I'm still convinced that the plugs are at end of life and need to be replaced (slow rough starts in the AM).

I replaced them quite easily on my '85 300TDT, but on this '87 it seems much more labor intensive given the manifold, cruise control and fuel lines. I'm only moderately mechanical....am I on the right track or is this easier than it seems. Thanks -harv

It's certainly possible to replace one with the manifold in place, but you'll need quite an assortment of extensions to do it.

If you're doing all six, it's much easier to remove the manifold. The elimination of the frustration factor alone is worth the work.

Having done 3 the hard way (manifold in place) and 3 the easy way (manifold removed), I concur with Brian.

You said nothing about cold starting difficulty. Have you checked the glow indicator bulb?

I think he did. You are right about the starting though.
