Here is MB's full list of coolants that meet their specs for passenger vehicles

Just FYI. Shows that there's much more available to use besides Zerex, and the MB stuff. However, most of it would be kind of hard to find stateside.

whats wrong with plain old propylene glycol like Sierra or something similar? this is made to co-exist with aluminum and plastic parts in a cooling system and it wont kill your animals

I'm not the engineer, but I'd assume that it's either missing some additive that MB deems necessary, or it has some characteristic that doesn't agree with the engines.

Who knows. At least they offer that there are a few alternatives to the MB branded ~$30 per bottle stuff!

ORLY? It's been a long time since I bought dealer coolant. If memory serves me correctly, it was only $12 then, and that was like 2-3 years ago.

Awesome!

I'm going to print this out and take it with me when I return to the local parts stores that all tell me that Dexcool is the same as the Zerex. Well, here's the proof that Dexcool isn't acceptable.

Thank you for posting this!

Doesn't dexcool have some sort of silicon additive in it or something?

I've been using the G05 Zerex.

Zerex makes number of antifreeze types, one of which is Dex-cool.

Without a more complete description, discussing "Zerex" is like debating whether a Mercedes uses gasoline or diesel fuel.

Just the opposite. It's silicate and phosphate free.

Valid point. I left out the G-05 part.

My local parts store swears that Dex-Cool can be substituted for Zerex G-05, because they have a Zerex reference sheet that shows all Mercedes using the same coolant, and another reference sheet from another coolant manufacturer showing their "Dex-Kool-Aid" fluid as being Mercedes compatible, so they believe they are the same fluid. They do not stock Zerex products even though they have the option to, because they feel their existing stocked products meet the needs of all vehicles. Well, the vehicle manufacturer trumps the coolant manufacturer's claim, in my opinion.

The generic Dex-Cool they sell is not approve by Mercedes, and now I have the proof in writing. They will actually appreciate and make use of the information, as they really aren't the kind of place to spread false information. If it keeps one person from mistakingly using the wrong fluid in their Merc, the time I take to talk to them and show them the information will be worth it.

Zerex certainly would not agree with that conclusion.
