|
Brake Master cylinder leaking
My brake master cylinder on a 1984 300 CD is leaking at the front of the cylinder where it attaches to the metal barrel.
 Is the rubber part replaceable or do I have to replace the entire master cylinder?

I've seen rebuild kits, but you can get reman MC's affordably.

Brake Reservoir Grommet seems to be where it is leaking from. I wonder how much trouble it is to remove the top to replace it.
Has anyone done this repair?

It's not hard to do. The reservoir just pops off, but you may have to bench bleed the MC after replacing the reservoir unless you're careful.
EDIT: Meaning you need to remove the fluid from the reservoir, pop it off, pull the seals and replace, then pop the reservoir back on and refill. If you're careful and don't introduce any air, you'll be fine. While the reservoir is off, you can put it in your dishwasher on the top rack and it will come out looking new.

the MC should be pretty cheap...i'd replace. if the MC is $$$ then I might consider trying a rebuild kit. take it apart and see if the bore and piston are pitted. if they are clean and shiny try a rebuild kit...just for personnal satisfaction and triumph over today's throw-away mentality

Well the brakes are fine no problem stopping. The less I spend the better.
 . Putting it in the dishwasher with my wife around  .

Just get the heavy stuff off it with brake cleaner first. I've done it in my dishwasher and it doesn't hurt anything. Sneak it in the dishwasher and then put all the dishes away when the cycle is done to "help out".

I would bleed (not flush) the system after you finish - just to be sure. This is a simple chore and well worth it.

We have a Bed & Breakfast I can just see my wife if a Guest wondered into the kitchen and they saw me removing a car part with dishes.
On another note has anybody used a 300CD as a casket?

I wouldnt let it go on leaking for too long. The brake booster (barrel thing) could get damaged from leaking brake fluid. Been there done that recently, Good luck, Jim
