Talking Route 66 drive/Volcano

Hey everyone, I took my 85 300D Turbo out to Amboy, California on Route 66 to go check out an extinct volcano and salt flats they have over there. You can hike up to the volcano and go in it and even to the rim! It was awesome and it was so much fun. It was cool and stormy when I went with my friend.

I got these cool pictures of the 300 thanks to my friend Jean and his awesome camera skills!

Any steam or rotten egg smell? My greasted hope is to walk up and see lava.

Keep going east and you'll get to the cool meteor crater just east of Flagstaff on route 66.

No no smell or anything like that. It's last eruption was 500 years ago. It's pretty eerie inside though. And it was a Bi*** hiking the trail to get into it. Lava rock fields all over though. I brought some home

Crazy to think the rock I was holding had been sitting in the same spot for 500 years, possibly even longer. The volcano dates back to 6,000 years ago. That's just amazing.

It's known as "Amboy Crater"

I have driven past there a couple of times. last time was in my brothers 300SD going to Havasupai. There was film crew doing a car commercial out there on the salt flats. Its very desolate out there. I hardly think anybody would care if you took a stinking rock. I certainly would not call it a criminal act

Not at all There is no such sign warning not to take lava rock. The only thing they ask you not to do is not dirt bike on the volcano as to preserve it! lol

Nice pictures. Photoshop into them some lighted headlights, would look even better.

Man, I love driving that stretch of road. I've always wanted to stop and hike up into the crater.

Thanks! Yeah, it's pretty rare to get snow in Southern California, unless you're in the mountains. Although this winter we actually got some snow in places it snows every 10 or 12 years lol. I have a thread on here of it and took some pictures, It was really cool and it was my first time ever driving in snow. Although since it was heavy, roads were closed down and you can imagine what it was like with Southern Californias driving in snow

That's crazy about Michigan! lol tundra, seriously. Our low here has been 47-49 and the high today is supposed to be around 80 something. Hardly get any rain, never usually get snow. So California does have nice weather. I would recommend you and your wife come to Southern California. Check out Los Angeles and San Diego! If you go to San Diego though make sure you drive on the Coronado Bridge! It's so awesome

First time driving in snow!!!!!

You can always hike Mt. St. Helens, over in Washington state. Its still erupting (been doing so constantly for the last few years), but they opened it up for hiking all the way to the rim since its not an exciting eruption -- it just kinda oozes lava under the dome where you can't see it.

I saw Mt Shasta by riding the rails on the now defunct McCloud River Railroad in a M-19 MOW car back 2002. Really pretty land, and hardly any man "improved" areas. The soil was sandy and the rock was red lava rock. The railroad even dug down a bit and used the lava rock for ballast.

The state of Arizona makes it a criminal offense to take petrified wood bits our of the petrified forest, even is the bits were found in the parking area...
