Trans filter change

I have a 1983 240D and changed the Trans fluid and filter yesterday.
On refilling I knowticed that the dip stick was was broken at one time then overlapped and welded. I replaced about 4 quarts of atf and guessed using the dip stick overlap to increase the fill over the line on the dip stick.
Would 4 quarts be enough?
Also sometimes the shift selector is not quite right, park sometimes does not lock right away and sometimes drive does not set untill I pull it back some. Is there a linkage adjustment?

worn shifter bushings.

on the dipstick, maybe someone w/ that transmission can post the length of their dipstick. then you can use a file to make new marks.

I'm glad you mentioned shifter bushings. I remeoved the rod connecting the floor shift to the transmission. Had a hard time getting the clips back on and lost one. Went to Mercedes for some clips and asked them to look to see if bushings were supposed to be there. I figured they should as the holes were large, but no bushings were present. I bought two and had a hell of a time trying to put them in. Heated them up in boiling water to no use, had to trim them with a knife. Then come to find they were so wide that they buried the part of the shaft where the clip has to go. Got the dremel tool out and ground some off of the bushings. Let me tell you it was a fun day under the car in the rain. Thanks for the tip to get bushings.
My Haynes Manual says the trans filter change job uses 5.1 us quarts.
I don't know it sounds like a lot. If anyone has an idea let me know. Thanks

If you only drained the pan (and not the torque converter) then 3.5-4 quarts sounds about right. But you missed about 55% of the fluid by not draining the torque converter too. Still better than nothing though.

Next change will have to include the torque converter drain. Job was easy except for the jacking up and fitting my oversize jack stands under. Yesterday I bought two drive on ramps, there plastic now I hope they are tall enough. Still if anyone knows the correct length of the dip stick I would like to double check.
