I have one....it allows you to hear a little more of the "low tones" when accelerating......but its not much. Most of the noise goes out the back. I'd say interior noise is about a 5-10% increase (if that) and rear-of-car noise increase is about 80%. I like it though. And off the line power is improved, and general throttle response is improved, since the turbo can spool up almost immediately.

Talking Runs better!

I've got a 1980 300SD & I straight piped it 6 mo. ago. it was like pulling a plug out of it. it was original muffler had mercedes logo on it.it was heavy. the car runs so much better now! the noise increase inside the car is not noticable. but it runs soooo much better! I'm thinking in the future of going to 3" pipe from the turbo to the rear bumper!

Straight out with a slight downward angle....it ends about 2cm inward from the bumper. Maybe a 15 degree downward angle. Lets me shoot soot clouds straight out the back! And, the sound is better when its aimed that way. I should take some video of mine....

A 3" pipe is not necessary, 2.5" is more than enough for what a 617 can flow. I went with 2.5

It does probably echo more in the pipe since its bigger....ok, 3" is fine too, I'd like it if it had more of a rumble. My favorite part is that you can hear the turbo at idle once its warmed up....and when you shut it down you can hear it whistle to a stop. Reving and letting off the throttle causes a "shhh....whistle" sound.

Mine is 2.5" all the way back. It comes out perpendicular to doors right behind the rear drivers wheel. When I first took it off I noticed I got some smoke under acceleration. If it don't blow black, take it back! Thats all I'm sayin'!

The muffler fell off the wagon last summer and the difference in the sound was minimal. I had a muffler shop weld it back together and the knuckle-head didn't get it straight and it rattled. I wish I would have him weld it up without the muffler. The truck has a
5" pipe. vrooooooooom What are the legalities of running without a muffler?

I've heard PawoSD's from the outside, think it sounds nice (and I'm not a loud-exhaust guy). I don't know if it gets obnoxious at full-chat, but normal driving away sounded refined enough to be just sporty.

My 1979 300SD didn't have any exhaust on it when I got it. It was surprisingly quiet, but left the underside of the car and engine compartment full of soot.
