New Tranny Problem

I lost nearly all foward movement while driving home. I noted no fluid on the dipstick and fluid trail on the driveway. I filled the tranny with fluid and all gears came back, and I found the leak. I have questions and will post pics Friday morning. The leak is fixed though. It was a bolt of some sort on the right rear. It is hollow and has a ball bearing in it. It passes through what looks like a pressure sensor.

Need to see pics of that Ralphie. There are several W123's at PNP if you need some specific obscure part.....

Here are the pics.

I now need to drain off some tranny fluid, as I now have it over filled...sheesh!

Anyway, on American cars of the 70's, when the fluid level reached the low mark, you were to add a pint. Is that approximately the same for the MB? If so, then I am about a pint over. I will take care of that when I get home tonight.

At least the tranny is shifting well and not slipping.

I did notice with the over fill, the 1-2 shift is not a hard. No flaring though.

So that would be about 6-8 ounces. Cool! I can use my mity vac and some long tubing to extract the excess.

So, would anybody care to identify the part that shot out of Ralph's tranny and describe exactly what it does?

Charlie, it appears to has just loosened and backed out. It was still in the kick down solinoid, and the aluminum crush washer was still there! Why, I do not know.

I did drive it home, it was about 5 miles, and all I had was first gear, intermittantly. I am thinking I should have just stopped and called AAA, but I had to get home so grab the truck so I could pick up my daughter.

Now, here is the update...

I made a crude suction device out of a jar with a metal lid so I could extract the excess tranny fluid. The level is now in between the low and high mark. The tranny shifts and performs like it did before the sudden fluid loss, except for one thing...the 1-2 shift is not as harsh. There is no slipping.

I'll keep tabs on it. Does anyone think any damage to the clutch packs occured?

I have to believe there is some additional wear to the clutch packs anytime there is any slippage. The question is...does it matter in the grand scheme of things..? Is some other failure going to occur first that will dictate replacing the tranny?

That is what I am thinking. I will be performing a fluid and filter change soon, so then I'll be checking the sediment in the pan.

I do not have the cash flow currently to replace a tranny. But, a new tranny is way cheaper than a new car.
