The Craftsman socket is 2 1/2" long; the Husky socket is 1 15/16" (just measured it) for me, that made the difference and made it possible to take all the plugs out.

Things are slowly going back together.

Here is the point where you just know you've ruined your car:

And here I am so far in the reassembly:

Had to come in, refill the coffee cup, take 2 pain pills [] so thought I would drop a couple pics down.
Back outside. Again...... [lots left to do!]

Project finished, and what a long evening.
After reassembly I had the cross over pipe off 3 more times!!!! Things must be put back in a certain order, and I also learned what to take off and what you don't have to.
I will construct a separate thread later on replacing OM606.910 glow plugs. Thanks for the help in this thread with the project as it was happening. Good help as usual!
Oh, but as the evening wore on, I did get some help from one of the next door neighbors Great Pyreneese......[I lifted him up upside down from the back leg yesterday and freed his back foot from the fence in between our properties. He was hanging upside down and yelping something fierce]

He didn't move much from one pic to the other. Was about a half hour difference....

That's my kind of helper. What are you going to do about the zip tied part? How long will it take you to get back to it?

I'm going to look it up and source it from the least expensive place possible I guess. Cheap little plastic vac pod!!
There is another tie wrap holding the accelerator linkage together, and I even have a brand new one ready, but I don't see how on God's green planet earth anybody can replace that thing!!!! Dang extra firewall........

JimmyL - What is the condition of your CCV breather hoses and manifold to the intake? Mine were so brittle that all the nipples connecting the IM broke off.

The vac line is capped off and the valve is tie-wrapped open I guess with two black tie-wraps.

Ouch!!! MBUSA wants $229, another online source wants $249 and Fastlane wants $268!! It will remain tie-wrapped for the foreseeable future.......
Too bad you can't just get the diaphram/pod portion, but it must be ordered as the complete Resonance Flap Assembly!

You might try taking the dashpot apart and using some bicycle tire repair to fix the diaphragm...

You'll find another similar valve under the manifold itself - in fact, you'll be able to see the flap by where the ports are for the cross over pipe.

The resonance flaps are controlled by the same control unit which switches the EGR and the partial throttle which is just upstream of the EGR.

The resonance flaps are opened to tune the effective manifold length at different engine speeds. At low speeds, the flaps make the effective manifold length very long (think of the long organ pipes which produce the low notes), and, as the engine speeds up, the valves open, effectively shortening the length of the individual manifold pipes.

It's generally thought worthwhile to have the resonance flaps working properly, and investigating why the tie-wraps are there, and why the system was disabled.
Eureka!
