What is the Fuel Pump Location of 1981 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Diesel?
Hello to Anyone that Knows,
I'm hoping someone can help us - my son and friend on working on their 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD diesel that had the fuel pump go out. After several months of saving money, one was purchased at a junk yard (already removed from the wrecked vehicle). However, they are out there in the drive first taking off the fuel tank, then someone said it was under the hood. Can anyone give me a more exact location and maybe an image of what they're looking for? Any other pointers would be great too. Thanks. |

Welcome to the forum.
The fuel pump is under the hood on the driver's side. You'll need to find the injection pump which is the device next to the engine on the driver's side with five metal tubes sticking out the top. On the side of this device facing the left side of the vehicle and down low......is the fuel pump. Follow the fuel line and you cannot miss it. All that being said, however, why do you believe that the fuel pump "went out"? It's fairly common to diagnose a bad fuel pump on a diesel that won't start, when, in reality, that is not the cause. |

Agreed. Thought I lost my fuel pump. It turned out to be air in the injector lines.

I would slow your Son down and have him spend some time reading up on the job before attempting to install the replacement Fuel Injection Pump followed by timing it. Even people with a high degree of mechanical skill can have some trouble with the above.
It also leads to the question how did someone diagnose that the Fuel Injection Pump was the problem when they do not even know where the Fuel Injection Pump goes? I am not trying to be negative just practical. Also the Fuel Supply Pump (this is the pump the pulls the fuel From the Fuel Tank and pushes it through the Spin On filter and into the Fuel Injection Pump) is mounted on the side of the Fuel Injection Pump.

Lift pump or injection pump? That is the question.

If the boys removed the fuel tank, it's time to clean it out and check the strainer, etc.

Seems odd that it would take months of saving to afford a fuel pump. It also seems odd that a lift pump already removed from the car couldn't be identified in the engine compartment.

First of all, where are you located? maybe there are some forum members that could come by and give the boys some pointers.
If they have to save for a few months for a fuel pump, how on earth are they going to afford to operate it? There is nothing more expensive than an old mercedes. There is a wealth of information here on the forum to read doing some searches, or just by reading the daily threads. In the resources tab above, look in the DIY section. www.dieselgiant.com has a lot of pictorials on DIY. This old SD will be a great learning experience for them. Charlie
