1986 190D? help please.

Hi everyone I am new to this board. I have a 86 190D 2.5, five speed manual. It is a non-turbo motor. It runs strong from what i can tell. My main problem is when you turn it off the motor does not die you either have to shut if off manually under the hood or stall it. I have replaced the plastic vacum valve on the injection pump but no change. my conclusion is im not getting enough vacum pressure to work the valve. I am mechaniclly inclined ive work on cars for my whole life, but i do not know much about the MB diesels and trying to find info like repair manuals or vacum schematics has been almost impossible. If any one has had this problem or knows where a manual could be found it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

You should let me take that lemon off your hands to eliminate your problem once and for all.
No, really!

Actually, the 190D 5 speed is a desireable combination for economical transportation and longevity...but not for speed.

You have a problem in the vaccuum system, either tubing/connector leakage or a failing vaccuum module (or both). Suggest you search this forum on that topic and borrow or invest in a Mity Vac (< 50 bucks) to go thru your system to locate the culprit(s).

There are several threads so be patient but persistent. You'll find it. For example try http://dieselgiant.com/mercedesvacuumtroubleshooting.htm

Also, Get a Haynes repair manual for your Model at the Parts shop, Not the best detailed but they've been helpful to me.

Good luck,

vacuum switch

The vacuum "switch" for the shutoff is located on the back of the ignition lock mechanism. If you can reach under the dash, or remove the instrument cluster, you will have access to these 2 lines. One line should have vacuum any time the engine is running. The other line should only have vacuum when the lock cylinder is turned "off" (i.e. the switch opens). These switches have been known to go bad.

If my memory serves me, one of the lines is burgundy colored, and the other is burgundy with a brown stripe. There are 2 short rubber connectors (approximately 1 inch long) which hook up these burgundy lines to the vacuum switch.

I have also heard of people sucking on the shut off line with their mouths to get the engine to shut off.

mj, I just drove mine again for daily commute as son came home saying locks wouldn't work properly. Got that taken care of plus the climate control functions again after replacement of a vacuum element (you will learn about those . He uses it while at school, I've owned it for 18 years, would buy another if I found one in as good condition. Has close to 300K on it (not original engine, but junkyard replacement probably has at least that).

Enjoy it and update what you find.

Bama1, gotta disagree about the "not for speed" statement. It just takes longer to get up there. My son is very much aware that it will register on radar at 93 mph Put it in 5th and its got legs!

Yes Hanno you're absolutely right, I keep forgeting how well those Lil Diesels can zip along with the 5 speed and especially top end speed. I did'nt intend to disparage the platform at all!
