Engine Rebuild in progress
My engine rebuilding is going very well. You can see some pics on my photo album: http://www.aspmingo.myphotoalbum.com
I do have questions though. 1. How to I verify I have the crank and cam lined up perfectly? 2. How do I verify that I have the IP timed correctly when I re install it on the engine? 3. The last Item on the engine I will be looking at is the IP pump. I know nothing about it. I never saw this engine run prior to the rebuild. I would prefer not send the pump out for testing. My question: What can I do before I reinstall this pump to get a idea of how good it is? Should I send it out? I was considering removing the side and bottom panel. Thanks Jim |

They hardly ever go bad.
If it were me I would probably just install and time it and hope for the best.

This might help.
www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=243899 Thanks for sharing your rebuild pictures. those light duty engine stands always make me nervous with all that weight hanging on there. especially when rotating the engine, hanging on that pipe handle hopeing it doesn`t get away from me. Charlie

If the pin on the vibration damper is perfectly centered under the hole for the tdc sender, is that TDC? Is that the mark you use on the crankshaft for ligning up the camshaft?
Does the "gear" that the ip pump runs off of require any special positioning with relationship to the crank and cam? |

What kind of motor are you rebuilding?

Ahhh, a 617.
It does not matter where the IP/Vacuum pump gear is when you connect either of them up. It has a splined shaft on the backside for the IP. Don't confuse the pin on the dampener with the TDC or timing mark. They are not the same. This is the crank at TDC: When inserting the IP, rotate the crank to 24 degrees before TDC. Rotate the shaft on the IP until the missing spline lines up with the mark. Put the splined coupler in the IP and insert it into the back of the block so that the studs coming out of the block are midway in the slots on the IP so you can adjust the IP either way.

Thanks so much I believe that answers all of my questions.
I am going to leave the pump alone and install and try it before I try doing anything. |
