manual transmissions from a jeep/amc corp?
Has anyone ever considered the 5 speed transmission out of the Jeep cherokee and comanche family? I was driving on the other day and got to wondering if it would be an option... It ought to be robust enough, and and and.. Maybe someone is all ready looked at it, and has found it to be a lemon?
What is your initial impression from this line of thinking?

I don't have the link handy, but there is a company on the web that sells adapters to bolt the OM617 to the AX15 and a few other light to medium duty manual trannys. The kits run about a grand.
So I guess it's pretty safe to say that others have thought about mating the OM617 to a Jeep transmission...

Check these guys out.
4x4 labs claims to be working on some adapters. http://4x4labs.com/dieselconversions.shtml
I have no personal experience with them and can't vouch for anything they do.

I talked with them last summer, and they had a set up in the testing phase.. it had a GM flywheel, that had been neutral balanced, and it sounded like it might have been the only thing left to pass an extended durability test.. Have not heard from them since..

I may be headed there.. and thinking the NP 3550 or NP3500 may be a transmission I will be considering. from what i understand, they are good for at least 300 LB.FT torque rating, weight about 100 lbs, and have a .71 fifth gear, and somewhere around 4.00 first gear...

I have a Jeep Comanche which I upgraded the transmission from the BA-10/5 to the NV3550. I also had an AX-15 sitting around from a time. I did breafly look into the idea of adapting one of the Jeep 5 spds. The problem if in a W123 chassis, is that the tranmission sits farhter forward than in a Jeep. That and the shifter is on the top. There are no rods to extend for the length difference. The BMW and the GM Trans AM transmissions look to me to be better canidates. Someone on this board has adapted a BMW trans already.

What type of Gm transmission would you be thinking of? I like that idea as they have to be pretty common...
I will scrap the 3550 idea, thanks for your imput on the shifter location, I had considered it, but had not done any measuring.

Diesel Jeeps made in Austria at the factory
The DaimlerChrysler Mercedes JV plant in Graz Austria used to make several models of minivan and Jeep that used a Euro diesel, not sure if it was Mercedes or not. Should be easy enough to research tho.

I think someone was looking at adapting the T-56 trans out of the Camero/Firebird. The shifter is towards the rear. I don't know if it has enough length. It seems a version of this trans is used in the Mustang Cobra. The shifter is in the middle of the trans. It might be interesting to see how that was accomplished. Then it might be adaptable to other transmissions. Another transmission that might be worth checking out was the one in the Jeep Liberty diesel. I had heard the engine in it was an old Mercedes design.
