New Dilemma

Hey all,
Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I turned 18 yesterday, and I've been busy doing other things for a while.

I'm posting a new thread since Cacela ('83 300SD) has a 'limp' right now... This last friday, I was coming back to the house from driving around the city. We still had lots of ice/snow on the ground. I was rounding the last corner out front of the building here before the straight stretch to where I park, when I slid across the ice and into the curb... I was at about a 45 degree angle from the curb, while the right front tire was parallel to the curb when I hit. I was going about 15mph I think. Since I'd just come off of a slight uphill I needed to maintain speed a bit. When I hit the curb, the tire jumped up onto the curb with a pretty decent bang... I didn't think much of it at the time. Sunday when I went out to change the tire back to my space, since the rim was dented in a fair bit from the impact. I took the tire off and noticed it was a fair bit worse than I'd hoped.

While sitting on level ground, the tire is 'toed' in at the bottom. When I jacked it up and took off the tire. The spring 'mount/holder' seems to have been pushed back in... There is a crack in what I think is the frame right by the (I don't know what everything is called yet )... well, the crack is on the frame just about straight back from the brake caliper, it is in the bottom of a little slot. I'll try to take pictures of it to post so y'all can get a better idea of what's going on. But it'd be nice if I could get the angles that I need to take explained so y'all can get the most out of the pics.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

Pictures will certainly help.
I would be surprised if the frame cracked due to this incident, unless it's very rusty.

I would suspect the wheel rim might be bent
(I had a similar incident in an '80 olds and bent the steel wheel)

Okay, I've got pics now... Let's see if I can post them in a decent order...

This is the damage to the rim...

Here's a direct shot at what I'm calling the frame crack...

And another one that shows one of the linkages that to me looks like it's been bent out from normal...

Here's one of the spring holder base... and the metal shavings in it...

And here's the whole area...

When looking at it from the front, the bottom of the brake disk... is definitely closer to the car than it should be... which I'm calling being toed in... If y'all need more specific pictures or angles... Let me know and I'll upload them and post them... thanks for the help....

Daniel

Looks more like a positive caster angle bend. You might get by with a new T/C rod and a shock to repair that.

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that your lower control arm is also bent.

The bent support rod progun mentioned affects caster, which is not responsible for your positive camber.

If the tire is further out at the top than the bottom (that's positive camber), your lower control arm took a hit. It's a common problem when you whack a curb.

I don't see body/frame cracks to be concerned about, though.

wow. The rod that you think is bent is indeed bent. It is called the guide rod and should be straight. I would think your lower control arm or where it mounts to the body must also be bent too. I also bet your guide rod (transmits the steering to the wheels) is also bent.

Hard to see the frame crack, it looks like you might just have a bit of rust on that mount.

Time to hit the junkyard!

Yep, the lower control arm could be toast too. I was just thinking the bushing may have given enough to let it bend back that much. It will show when you disassemble. Be careful with the spring, it can be dangerous without the proper compressor.

My good friend owns a salvage yard with a bunch of W126s. Looks like you need a new guide rod and lower control arm...

I watched Roy take apart a W126 front end at the tech session... Hope you have lots of coercive instruments. At times he was beating on the car so hard, I thought it would fall off the lift.

BTW, that tire looks way too bald for snow driving. No wonder you had issues.

*edit* I wonder how well a Honda would have handled a curb hit like that.

Yeah, I know my tires are BALD!!!! I just can't afford new ones yet Okay, I'll look into getting the parts that've been mentioned... hopefully I won't kill myself too badly putting them on ... The guy I got the car from said that if I ever needed parts, that he had a 300SD that I could use as a parts car, so we'll see... Just as a question, is there anyone in the area that'd be able to come help if I get into troubles with the parts replacemets? I fractured my thumb the middle of December... and it's still giving me grief, that's one reason I haven't been on the forums for a while... Just on a side note, I was wondering the same thing about the cheap oriental cars Tyler, my dad said after I messed it up, that it wouldn't of bothered his Nissan Sentra... I just laughed...

LOL, the Nissan Sentra would have flipped over .

I feel bad for you that your baby got a Boo Boo. when you get it fixed you will be a expert on this part of your car. be safe doing it.

the money you saved not buying good tires, will now go to buying good parts.

Yeah you just kind of dropped off the edge there for a while. Don`t let the thumb slow you down, you have 9 other digits.

Did you ever make it out to Yearington for Christmas?

Well, I'm hoping that I can get the parts for either free, or almost free...

Yes I made it out to Yerington for a night, and then I was up above Placerville on US-50 for a week... I tried calling you once, but I didn't have the best reception, and you didn't answer... Anyways, I'd best get up so I can call the guy I bought the car from to see if I can come get those parts...

I'm so glad I got my car instead of a gasser Nissan or Toyota like dad wanted me to... lol... I surprised my girlfriend the other day by making a u-turn on a road that she thought wasn't near wide enough... lol

Well, I'm out here wrenching on it. There are several tools I wish I had... like a spring compressor for one... but Oh well... I guess if I get my arm snapped... it'll be a bit OOPS... I'd wait till I was able to borrow proper tools... but I need to get the car finished now... so yeah...

Daniel, Don`t cut corners to save a buck. Think Safety!!

That spring comes flying out of there it will more that snap your arm.

It will kill you.. It is tightly compressed in there.

Like a girl taking off her 40DD, things come flying out .

I just missed a spring compressor om e-bay for $110.00 . most of them are around $200.00 with the shipping.
