Replacing front door window 'scraper' seals.
Has anyone done this?? Mine are looking pretty ratty and torn up. I've done a search and found out that the door trim panel must be removed to access??? I really would appreciate any info and where I can procure a set of replacement seals!
Thanks! |

Phil sells them. They might need a cutting with a tin snip if they're the same size as the coupe. There's little clips that hold it to the metal strip at the top of the door panel. You can do it.

Is there a "How To" with pictures showing any little tricks? I didn't find anything in the DIY section of the forum.

I just did 2 of mine. First be sure not to bend the new rubber strips! Mine were so bad I could pull the rubber off by hand with the metal strip still in the clips. 1st use a putty knife and pry up the metal trim. Then pull the old seal out of the metal clips that hold the seal on the door. If really bad the old rubber my come off and leave the metal from the inside of the rubber still in the clips. BE SURE TO TAKE THE OLD MEATAL OUT! Don't ask me how I know this. Then simply put the new rubber strip in and replace the trim. To do the rear windows(much shorter) I used a saw to cut the strip to the propper length keeping the same profile on the end. The whole project is really not hard just use common sense. I think ******** in Phoenix has the best prices. HTH JEFF

I need this badly on my 82 300cd. So you can just buy the rubber and its more or less like just changing the rubber in a windshield wiper?

So this is done from the inside of the door once the trim panel has been removed?

Does this look like the replacement seal? |

That looks like the seal that the window slides in (3 sides, not bottom).

the outside is a little different. You will have to take out the side mirror for one. That is held on buy three screws. Just take the plastic chrome cover off, it just pulls off. After the mirror is off the chrome molding on the door has to come off. To do this you just push up from the bottom of the trim, make sure the windows are down it will make it easier. And once that comes off its the same as the inside. I learned how to do this when i replaced my window.

Thanks a lot for the reply! I really want to replace them but I need to know if the link I posted shows the correct seal. On a car of this age (1978) I am afraid of breaking anything I touch, especially trim.

The trim wont break it is metal. dont worry about breaking anything, the more you think about it the more likely it is to happen. just go for it. Remember everything is replaceable with something from a yard.
