What kind of life are you getting from engine mounts???

'85 wagon
Got less than 3 years from W123 engine mounts!!
I had the engine mounts replaced a few years ago when somebody rebuilt the front end for me. I don't know what kind of engine mounts he used, but probably Worldpac stuff.
I just had this awful vibration. I had adjusted the rack dampner ad nauseum. I didn't really consider the engine mounts at first since they had been done so recently. Well, finally took a good look at them as this vibration could only be from the engine resting on the cross member. Sure enough they were very compressed.
I installed Cortego mounts this evening and if I only get a few years out of these then I will go with OEM mounts next time.
What kind of life have some of you been getting?
The replacement didn't go too badly. Sure is easier on a 240!! The lower 8mm allen screws both came loose and out pretty easily. The 2 6mm allens that hold the mounts to the frame are always fun. At least the inside bolt is!
I had to jack up the engine, try to line up an engine shock with it's hole and use a prybar to get the engine to sit right in the center of the mounts. All this while trying to time the lowering of the jack/engine. At least once lined up the lower 2 bolts threaded themselves into the aluminum mounting arms easily. That is always the fearful part.
Well, that is engine mounts on 2 cars in 2 nights. Did the E300 last night. Sure is different going from the W124 to the W123 on this job. I don't worry about jacking up the OM617 at all, but that OM606 made me nervous.
Oh well, two very smooth idling cars now.
So, again, what kind of life are yall getting from engine mounts?

I remember Roy saying at the GTG that he has to replace his mounts every couple of years.

A year and a half so far on Ol' Turbo. The Defiant's mounts are spankin' new.

I would think that solid mounts like the 123 has would last longer than the "hydraulic" versions that the later 124 and 210 cars have. My '85 (300D-T, W123, OM617) has the same motor mounts it came to me with in 2006. The other two cars each had to have theirs replaced soon after purchase. Waiting to see how long they last.

I only got a year and a half out of the ones in my 240D Turbo. :(

You're right on target - the mounts only last a few years then they need replacing again. Get used to it.

Both corteco/freiburgs totally collapsed three months after I installed them. The Lemforders I pureplaced them with better last longer than that.

Now at about 10 years / 130k on genuine MB mounts on the 300D. Still in good shape. :)

My W210 got 10 yrs. and 150K miles off the originals. But they probably could have been changed 10K earlier.

Are they the most likely culprit for shaky idling at proper rpm?

TMAllison 02-07-2009 12:23 PM

JT - Very likely. Easy to test; just lift engine ~1/4" at oil pan with a floor jack and rubber bushing between the two.

Yep; mine idles smoothly with the new motor mounts.

jt20 02-07-2009 12:33 PM

SO.. in the cabin, you feel nothing and your hood does not appear to dancing related to the road in front of you?

TMAllison 02-07-2009 12:35 PM

On my W210 I felt it in the steering wheel as a minor vib at idle. Fire it up and test em; its easy enough.

jt20 02-07-2009 12:37 PM

gotcha... you meant 'with the motor running'. thanks. Will do.

redassag00 02-07-2009 11:05 PM

as inexpensive as they are, I don't mind replacing them every 2 years or so.
