Mystery (Hydraulic?) fluid on driver's side
83 TD. So every once in awhile some sort of fluid gets scattered around my engine compartment, with a good amount ending up on the driver's side of the hood (thrown by the steering belt I guess). It's not black, and it's not red, and it looks alot like hydraulic fluid. However, it might be my imagination but these "events" seem to coincide with the AC kicking in (was warm today).
So I'm wondering, is it leaking hydraulic fluid, or is it somehow the AC? And if it is the hydraulic stuff, what would be leaking in a way that gets fluid on the belts (and thus scattered all over). I haven't been able to catch this leak in live action... |

Check your lines from the sls res to the pump.

could be the power steering pump, the high pressure sls line, or the low pressure sls line, or either PS line.
I found the PS pump shaft seal was leaking on mine with similar results. it was hard to pinpoint, because the fluid never really got low. so I sucked the PS res. dry w/ my topsider and then flushed the system by unhooking the return line, starting car and pouring fluid into the res as fast as I could , then shut the car off- only ran it for like 50-60 seconds. then topped up PS res. to a set mark on the shaft which holds the cap, and monitored that level. the next time I noticed that the hood was damp, checked, and sure enough the level was down-1/8" or less, but down.

Sounds like a classic case of your SLS high pressure hose starting to develop a leak. I've had this happen on all 3 wagons I've owned. It will get to a point fairly soon where it will be pretty obvious where the leak is coming from!
This hose runs from the top of the SLS pump over to a connection point on the right inner fender, under the side of the air cleaner. Is the fluid level dropping in your SLS reservoir?
