Surgery on 300SD Resonators that were pulled
Maybe I can add an experience to help others now or in the future. I haven't added much yet.
Center Muffler Pair-Resonators Mine did not leak they looked good but made a "horrible" in Cabin slapping sound (metallic). Bla bla bla bla slap slap slap on every power stroke, mostly from 600 RPM to 1500 RPM. It would make you feel you had a 2 inch hole in the exhaust system behind the 2 front seats. You could not hear it with the door open sitting in the car. Go figure. They were original as far as I can tell. MB numbers stamped on them. Well I had a muffler shop cut them out and put in a 12" straight bypass and I brought them hope to open them up with a chiesel. First off they were not full of carbon!. They were heavy at 25 pounds but most likely the correct weight. 1. What you have inside is a U tube made of heavy-heavy steel pipe with perforated holes as it was designed. Then about 2/3 the way "outboard" there is a "end-compartment" where they make the bend. At this compartment there is a heavy "partition plate". This plate was rattling and making the noise. 2. The car to me is not any noisier with the center mufflers removed and I suspect it runs alittle better. It sounds slighly Sportier. If I knew how they were made on the inside instead instead of having them removed I may have "tried" to Peen (bang the **** out of it carefully, lol) the outer cover about 2/3rd the way out with a chiesel to slightly compress the partition plate against the outer metal. I believe it may have worked. Since this car was from Florida there was no outer rust on the ouside of the muffler. Hope this helps somebody in the future. Nothing wrong with quick fixxes!

I did this to the SD as well.
However, one point of note is the inability for the shop to put a center mount in place of the resonators. They tried twice. Each time, the noise from the exhaust would resonate through the cabin. I didn't insist that they hang the system with rubber donuts.........and, in retrospect........that probably would have worked. So, it's mounted at the downpipe and the at the rear muffler, without any other support. It's very quiet.........but, the durability of the mounting system is definitely a concern. |

FWIW, I thought I had a problem with my exhaust system and it turned out to be cracks in the flex disks. Never hurts to give them a lookey-loo when you're under the car.

Yeah, I had the resonators removed when I re-did my exhaust, I asked the fella to make a support that utilizes the stock hanging points.
All's well.

I like it. What did he use there for the steel support?

I did use the center left and right rubber donuts. I purchased (2) 3 foot sections of 3/8" x about 3/32" thick plain steel flat bar at ace hardware. 3/8 flat bar fits the rubbers best as these bumpers are flat on the inside, not like the round ones on the rear muffler.
The fellow made a loop in the end of the flat bar for the rubbers on one end of each bar. Then he supported the exhaust pipe (jumper already in) with one of those tall floor muffler jacks and overlapped the two sections "on top" of the installed short Jumper. Then he welded it to pipe (both flat bars overlapped on top of exhaust pipe). Then he tacked along the way. So he used 3 feet on each side with over lap in middle. The whole job took like 30 minutes and I bought the flat bar for $3.50 each. $7 material, $20 Labor Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I've got to get a similar setup if I can.

What purpose did MB intend the resonators to serve?

Additional muffling of the exhaust sound....it cancels out pretty much all the noise.

Can't remember, but I asked him if he wanted me to provide something. He mentioned he could probably get a rod that would work, so I told him to come up with something. I'm sure he marked it up, but I wanted the ends bent, so no problems.
I can't give a price for just that, as I had everything from the manifold back replaced, including an Ansa muffler. The flex pipe was the priciest item.

In that case I would like to get some "engine resonators" to do away with the diesel engine sound.

The resonators were to stop a vibration the exhaust made at certain rpms. So far no one has noticed any more racket from these cars once the resonators are removed. Maybe it goes away when the rest of the car gets older and softer.

Easy, buy a gasser.

I'd prefer the resonators back on but they had failed on the inside as mentioned. I had read that the noise did not go up much so I wanted to try removing them.
Right now I see other areas I'd rather spend money on rather than purchasing $300 Resonators + Labor. They can always be reinstalled, it just seems like a waste of money at this point in time.

Mine is a bit louder, only at speed, but hardly annoying.
