Sorry for not having much up recently...things have been a little crazy. So far all I've had the time to do is take the motor out of the Rover and get it started on a rebuild (going to sell it). Also purchased the OM617 (which is what I decided on), and have upper-end gaskets and valve stem seals for it waiting to take the top of it apart.

As for the adapter, you don't need to cut the MB trans because Mercedes kindly places a stock "adapter plate" between the transmission and the motor. I'm simply planning on using the motor side of the MB plate as a pattern for half of the new one (the motor side obviously), then I'm going to measure things up and probably align them and transfer dye the bolt hold on the Rover trans to the other side of the plate (I'm going to take it out to do this, and I might decide to use a transfer punch to confirm placement...

I'll put more up when I have the chance.

joeblack, do you mean manual transmissions or shop manuals for the Rover? If you want a shop manual for it you can get one on CD from D.A.P Land Rover (www.dap-inc.com). I don't know if this site deletes all url addresses, but that's:
www(dot)dap-inc(dot)(com) just in case.

I can do whatever is needed for fit, but I'm more worried about weight as the motor coming out of the Rover is supposedly around 400lbs (with accessories).

I thought about the sprinter motor, and I could have done it significantly cheaper than you suggested...would have just bought a motor from an old 2.7 and rebuilt it myself...did see a few older wrecked Sprinters for ~4K or so...which would have included much more than just the electronics and motor (I wouldn't have used the transmission anyway, but...). I'd rather wait till WVO technology improves a little before I venture in that direction, but it will probably be my next venue seeing as it's certainly lighter than the OM617 and produces significantly more power (well until I'm done with the 617 at least).

As for the Transmission shifting hard, I'm not even thinking of using the Mercedes transmission and the 4HP22 on the Rover is electronically controlled, so there are things you can switch out/adjust on it to make it shift properly. Not worried about it. There's still a chance I'll be doing the shifting anyway via Getrag 262 (from an e28 535i).

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the Rover motor for the time being and I CAN'T WAIT to have that wiring harness OUT!!! Along with all the ignition and injection junk...the 617 will be a breath of fresh air compared to that thing I believe. If anyone wants a rebuilt 3.9 Rover motor... (probably not on here, but...).

I have mulled over this swap for years and years. I am a rover aholic as well as owned a number of 617 cars.

the swap would be pretty cool for sure but there a re a few obstacles. The least of them are what has been brought up here.

The 4hp22 in your 95 RRC is a mechanical trans. There are no electronic funtions so that makes it easy. The transfercase is a BW with a viscouse coupler that wont hold up IMHO so a very easy swap to a LT230 out of a disco would be in order but that also is not a problem as the swap can be done complete for about $500.

The biggest obstacle to over come is the pan. and the length of the motor. The easiest way to do the pan is to just build a custom pan and pick-up. The other option would be add a good sized lift to the truck. I run a 5" lift on my discovery and I could run the factory pan without issue from what i can tell.

I also own a 95 RRC and they are the best of the classics. I may do this exact swap into that truck at some point. My dailey driver is a TDI that I run on bio and have for years so I am allready neck deep in both the biodiesel thing and the rover thing so for me its just kinda a natural progression.

I'm with you on this one, the late model classics were fantastic to look at. There was a very rare interior option that i've always searched for but could never find on any for sale Rangies. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3906/...nteriorgd5.jpg

If I could get that interior on this Brooklands TWR with a 617.....*druel*

just my opinion--I have driven a lot of them at the auction I used to work at, They handle like carp. On the other hand, because of the aluminum engines going south-ala 215 buick--They can be picked up all day long DOA for $2500.00 on craigslist in any city. Two different junkyards I check have each got two late models with the 4.0 or 4.2 sitting in them
