Exclamation 87' Mercedes 300TD front end engine noise

i went to crank the engine on my partially assembled 603 engine to do a compression test and i heard this pinging coming from the engine, somewhere near the valve train near piston 1. the sound was metallic and came in rhythm about twice every second. i am about 87% sure that this is a metal on metal sound but im no expert. hence this post.

my best guess is either a piston is hitting a valve somewhere. which i believe could be a timing problem. but again i could be wrong

my other guess is something in the timing mechanism.

post quickly

Did you check cam timing?

Did you remove the vacuum pump and belt and turn the engine?

when i disassembled the engine i took a punch to both the chain and the sprocket. and then matched it back up when i put he cam back in. but i will definetly check again. mabey it jumped. i can't remember if i ran it without the tensioner or not, that would have been dumb.

no i did not remove the vacuum pump belt, what would that do.

The vacuum pump isn't driven by the belt, it's driven by the radial cam on the IP timer. I meant remove the belt and remove the vacuum pump then see if you still hear the noise.
