Long shot, but does anyone know what this means?
so, on my 87 300SDL right above the passenger side headlight, on the metal strip that has all the chassis numbers and such there is writing in permanent marker that reads"trans @171"
if anyone has seen this or has done this to a car, would you let me know why it has or may have been done. My guess is a tranny rebuild, but the trans leaks so there is not a very likely chance it has only 19k on it. |

It must mean the tranny has been replaced.

is it possible that a tranny with less then 20k on it would leak fluid like she does? The previous owner says that it has always leaked since he got it, however he didnt drive it much. She also makes a real bad clunk when i let it coast and then put my foot into it on the pedal, so i'm not convinved it was replaced.
These problems were from time not mileage, because it probably has only 15-25k or so in the past 5 years. |

... a clunk could be many things... from cv joint, to differential, to center bearing... many many things...

How many miles on the car? Maybe it means transmission fluid and filter changed at 171K miles. Maybe the fluid level was last checked at 171K miles

It may also mean it received a "donor" trans at 171k.

I've seen lots of writing and stickers on oil change miles, and is what I'd suspect for this; trans fluid and filter change.

what does the writing appear to be done with? If it looks like it was painted on with a paint marker, i would suspect that the trans was replaced with a salvage yard trans. I have seen things like this very often on the old cars I have worked on.

she looks like it was done with a sharpie. I'll take a pic 2maro when i go to visit her, and show you exactly where and what it is. doesnt make sense to me, as to why they would write that for a fluid change because it doesnt come off, and its not like its is or will be the last one

how about you look up your the tranny serial # and then crawl under the car and see if the # on the tranny matches the # from the VIN decoder site.
http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng Good idea?

No matter what you find, it will be inconclusive.
If it is like the typical oil change or anti-freeze temp/check written there, you know nothing about the transmission's age. If it is not the original transmission, you don't know the age, source, or condition of the replacement. If it is the original transmission, you don't know whether it is the mileage the fluid was changed, or whether it is the rebuild mileage. Further, you don't know the extent nor quality of the rebuild. If it works, drive it. If it doesn't, fix it. If it's fluid age is un-known, service it.
