Most of the time yes, it's held in with a c-clip inside the diff. Which car?

It depends if you have the Homokenetic or Annular axles.
The Annular has an axle stubb that fits into the Diff., and on then about 6 bolts that bolts the axle to the stubb. with this type, the Diff does not have to be opened up. That is if the replacement axle is an Annular. If the only axle you can locate it a Homokenetic, then the Diff. has to be gone into. Look in the DIY Articles, under W123 rear axle replacement by DMORRISON. The axles he is replacing are Homo. and the axles he installed are Annular. Charlie
