It does drone a bit in the midrange but overall I think it added a little HP to eliminate it. With only 83 HP to begin with I'm grateful for any increase I can get.
The issue with the 617 is the mount for the exhaust system when the resonator is eliminated. Any hard mount will cause the resonance. If the system is hung on rubber............there is no additional noise. The SD is identical before and after the resonator..........as well as I can determine. Right now, it has a single support at the rear muffler. I'm not happy about it, but it's very quiet.

Well we installed a new ANAS muffler behind is not straight pipe, It was quieter because we had a hole in the resinator, and its run good there is no dreded droning noise at any rpm... I had a shop did it for $45...

FOr the OM617 you can use a a rubber exhaust mount and get a long thin bar and put under the exhaust pipe so it hold's it, and add a Heat resistance Rubber under the metal bar so you wont have the annoying buzzing exhaust sound at idle... I ll see how this guy will do on my straight pipe on this weekend...

My Euro 5-speed 300TD has a nice growl while revving up through the gears - a sound I don't remember hearing in any of my friends automatic turbo-diesels. Hopefully, I won't need to 'straight-pipe' anything for awhile, as the PO had a complete OE exhaust system installed, but I do wonder if eliminnating my resonator would result in any performance improvement.

Happy Motoring, Mark

My straight pipe is supported by two hooks with rubber donuts at the back of the car, plenty good, since the tube is very rigid and sturdy, and doesn't weigh much.

At least it wasn't an ANUS muffler, I hear those stink.
