I got my dad to remove his Resonator

so he was thinking to replace that Old perferated Resinator out of the 300SDL... well i saved him $180 but just adding a short 2 feet pipe where the resonator was at, Yeah SHE SMOKES!!!! And Turbo spools faster too... i looked into the resonator and man there was a ton of SOOT and cr@p in there.... And the best thing it, it's quieter....

I think no resonator in your car would sound weird.. The diesels have the turbo to help quiet things down.

When ever I accelerate briskly in the SDL I get tons of soot out of the tail pipe. Like, enough to make a cummins over jealous.

I had to re do the exhaust on my SD, I had the fella doing the work just straight pipe it back to the muffler, new OEM, it is a little louder at highway rpm, no difference at idle.
He welded a support bar, and utilized the stock hanger points.

80's old school, there is less weight now, and less expense to boot, the way I see it, it's a win win situation, but if you insist, knock yourself out.

The 617 turbo sounds best with a 2.5" straight pipe from the turbo to the rear....woo man does it sound good. Especially when its warmed up at idle after a good freeway run....sounds like a ginormous truck in back. (not in loudness, but in the rhythm and sound/feel)

I will never go back!

Not to mention the turbo spools instantly and off the line torque is better, its got more power all around....

Just to clarify are you talking about the resonator in the middle of the system or the muffler at the rear?

They are. They're removing a malfunctioning device and replacing it with a better alternative.

I 100% agree! im sure if there ever was a performance exhaust made for these cars it would be something just like that.

I think my resonator is falling apart internally - it rattles at a certain rpm..... this makes me feel even better about my idea to remove it and replace with with a straight pipe!

It's not like your turbo will spool faster........

very true - and not having a turbo will also make it a bit louder.... I can always put a new resonator in if I don't like the straight pipe for some reason.... My exhaust is far from stock anyway - definitely a muffler shop job.

I haven't looked at my exhaust on the '95 but it has a great sound, nothing at all like the W123's. Has kind of a growl to it when accelerating. I can't imagine it isn't stock but need to crawl under there to have a look......

I've got some issues with the '87. It's the stock factory setup and it exhibits a resonance at 1200 and 2400 rpm. It's very noticeable inside the cabin and quite annoying.

What I'd like to determine is whether the resonator has failed on this vehicle.

Can you kindly check your father's car and pay careful attention to 1200 rpm for a light droning sound inside the cabin. There should be ZERO exhaust noise from an SDL at any rpm. I'm curious if it's now present without the resonator.

Be very cognizant of what you're listening to............I'm depending on you for a precise answer.

I also have no center resonator on my '81 non-turbo coupe. (the price on it was something like $900!) I have a 2" straight pipe all the way back to the rear muffler. (with a little JC Whitney flex-pipe under the differential)

It does drone a bit in the midrange but overall I think it added a little HP to eliminate it. With only 83 HP to begin with I'm grateful for any increase I can get.
