240d front end issue

The car has been getting the shakes on the highway at around 55 mph. I just noticed that I can wiggle the passenger side wheel a little bit horizontally, but not vertically. I tried the drivers side to see if I could replicate the movement, but it seems solid. I don't think it's the wheel bearing, but I'm not completely ruling it out. The tie rods are straight, but I'm not too sure if the ball joints or the tie rod ends are shot. Ideas?

What kind of shape are the rubber boots on the BJ's and rod ends?
Turning the steering wheel back and forthwhile someone watches the front end components usually will show up a badly worn joint or end.
