I am big fan of the Behr thermostat. I had very good results using them.

What is the brand of the culprit? Did you do any modifications to the new Behr or installed it unmodified.

Unfortunately, even the brand-names are now coming from China. I got a Wahler thermostat last year for my 240D at a local autoparts store. Those used to be German, but this one was made in China. So far no problems.

Before I replaced the rad, hoses, tstat, rad cap and coolant in my 81 240 it would run at 80 and it now runs at about 88 or so. I have noticed that when I occasionally put it in neutral and roll down a long hill the temp will rise close to 100. I assume this is due to the engine just idling and so the fan is not turning as quickly and so it gets hotter.
As soon as I put it back in gear it will drop back down to the high 80's.

So why do you want it to run so cool, anyways? 84*C is about 183*F - well below the most efficient temp range. Is there some other benefit to these old MBs running cooler?

Regular Tstat replacements?

I've been having the same issues of temps reaching 100. I replaced the Tstat a few months back and it was back to 84 degrees or so. Now it's back up to 100.
Higher temps have been noted when the weather is fair 75 to 85 degrees outside. For some reason theTstat appears to be being lazy about opening. Or on long up hill grades the temp goes up. I've had the radiator flow tested and they say it's fine. I've never tried the 85mph + fix yet as I live in the mountains.

I'm guessing we need to change the Tstat every third to fourth oil change.

I've done the vinagar treatment to the radiator when it was off the car. Lot's of junk came out then. Next time I have the radiator out I'm going to try a new trick Tang. Yes the same as the spacemen drink. Same orange citrus cleaner Just off the car so I can control where it's going.

BTW Orange hand cleaner works great on water spotted windows.
My brother uses Tang to clean the water spots of the inside of his dish washer. If it works there why not my radiator?????

In Sonora you have the dual challenge of hot summer weather and lots of grades to climb and descend. What do you use in the way of coolant? I rarely have thermostat problems so others who do always puzzle me. Not to say you're doing something wrong, I just don't understand what is causing this problem. My Benzes typically run around 80C in mild weather and get up towards 100C in hot weather with the a/c on.

Mine has always run around 100* in the warmer months, it'll rise a couple degrees with extended uphill climbs and hold then drop back down. I figured it was ok.

for all you 100° drivers out there, try flushing out all the coolant, and putting in a good 70%DISTILLED water with the 30%MB coolant. unless you live in alaska, this mix will be best for your car.

Ok I tried the 450SL thermostate and it seems to be making temps higher by about 5 degres F. What I did notice was the spring was noticably thicker on the 450SL part.
Ambient temps here are runnning about 83 degrees F. This seems to be the ambient temps that seem to be harder for the thermostate to regulate as I think it should. Taking the car for a drive the thermostater does not seem to open till around 100 degrees C. As soon as it opens it closes again, guessing that the cooler water just closed it that fast. Again the temps rise to about 100 degrees C. I've not had time to warm it up thoroughly yet. I think this is whats happening with the cooler ambient temps the cooling system is working too well.

Diesel Giant recommends drillling the thermostate to allow hot water completely around the thermostate. Mercedes had already done this on the 300D/240D motors. Note the round hole on the gasket. By their pictures it looks like they just ruined a perfectly good thermostate. I'm going to change out the thermostate again and check that port to see if is completely clear. I have not had time to take the car for a full warm up, but as it seems the 450 SL part is running hotter even though it shows to be cooler.

This all seems to be just like my climate control Nothing works like I think it should.
