Vacuum problem

I just got this car a few days ago. Nice car. It does however have a few minor problems.

It has this "whistle" noise on the drivers side in the engine bay. I'm pretty sure it is vacuum related. I'm just trying to find some help on isolating the noise and fixing any leaks.

I spent most of today working on the car, taking things apart and inspecting things.

After reading several different vacuum diagrams I have found that this is in fact a California car. This adds quite a few more vacuum lines to the equation.

There are 2 vacuum lines that are open to the interior of the car. The large filtered line pulls quite a bit of vacuum. Not sure how much (I'm buying a gauge and mighty vac tomorrow).

Any other help in isolating the leak is greatly appreciated.

It appears the Calif. model has an extra switch over valve and a vacuum transducer along with an additional vent line. The below schematic matches what is under the hood perfectly. It is all there. I just need to isolate the problem.

Here is the diagram for the car:

That's the diagram for the '85. It's the only vehicle with that setup.

My advice is to eliminate one-half of the system on that vehicle since you don't have any emissions inspections in FL.

I can show you how to do it...........if you're going to do it.

If not.........just tell me..........it requires a bit of time and patience.

That is actually the diagram for 1985 California. According to the data I downloaded. There is an 1985 "Federal" diagram that has a little less "spaghetti". Is there only one diagram for the 85? Maybe I am missing something...

I was seriously considering hacking off all that crap earlier this afternoon. The only reason for not doing it is my lack of knowledge of this "specific car" and lack of knowledge on the "platform" (W123).

Fire away and I will hack into it tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help!

1) Find the orifice at 63b. Pull the vacuum line out of this orifice.........remove the orifice and plug the hole in the T. The line goes to item 84. Pull this line out of the vehicle and toss it in the trash.

2) Follow the vacuum line that goes into the top of item 81...........follow it up to the T. Pull the line out of the T and plug the hole in the T. Pull the entire line all the way to item 81 out of the vehicle and toss it in the trash.

3) Remove the line from item 81 to item 71 and toss it in the trash.

4) Remove the line from item 84 to item 60 and toss it in the trash.

5) Remove items 81, 84, and 85 and toss them all in the trash (with their interconnecting lines).

Now, you've got a much simpler system that can be tuned for proper operation.

After this mod, how will it affect vacuum? Will I need to follow an older models procedure for trans. vacuum. Or do I stick with the specs for 85 trans.

I have been reading about this all day. Thanks...

It will not affect vacuum unless the system was leaking. If so, it will likely provide more vacuum to the trans.

With 20 year old transmissions, the specs don't mean much. They need to be tuned individually to get the shift characteristics desired by the driver.

Fortunately, the '85 has almost unlimited adjustment potential.

Thanks again.

What are you using to plug the T's (permanently)?

Personally, I remove the T completely because a plug is not a durable solution. I then connect the remaining two lines with a short piece of 4mm vacuum hose.

THANK YOU!!!

Brian,

You are THE MAN!!!!! Thank you so much for your help!

This is a different car literally. I honestly cannot believe the difference!

It is hard to believe that something so small could make such a difference.

Now the car boosts properly, shifts properly and that annoying whistle is gone.

I'm still in shock....

Best Regards,

AJ

This is an old thread...

As long as you don't have any leaks... I would think that would be ok.

As long as you have all that spaghetti, there is a possibility of a leak in any of those lines or elbows.

If you have inspections. Leave it hooked up and use bb's every where you can to block the flow of vacuum to those components. You did not hear me say that...
