My gassers are the Harley and a 1997 Ford F150 pick up. I will say that the Ford truck is about as dependable as anything I have ever had but it sure does use fuel like it is going out of style.

I have the BMW for my gasser. I do want either a 190e 2.3 to toss around or a nice 560SEC as a cruise missile. However, the wifey says I would need to get rid of the BMW to fo this and I just Love Fritzie too much to dump her.

I've got two E320s, don't compare to the diesels though, I consider the gassers my throw-away cars.

I've owned 123's in the past -- bought my 85 300SD last October, and love it. My wife has an 01 E320 Wagon with 234,xxx miles (work car)...it's been an amazing car.
She keeps it serviced per MB suggestion - we've replaced a couple of coil packs, alternator, starter, a/c compressor, egr tube, mass air flow meter + the normal things like brakes, tires etc... It has started to use a quart of M1 syn about every 1000-1200 miles, but it runs great, is very reliable and she goes anywhere and everwhere in it --- just returned from a Pittsburg, PA trip... Her gasser has convenced me that MB's are outstanding --- Diesel or Gas.

Nobody knows fuel consumption until they take a Mercedes 6.9 to 140 mph and hold it there.

A Bugatti Veyron can use up its entire 20 something gallon tank in less than 12 minutes at max speed (253mph)....thats close to a gallon every 30 seconds! A SLR McLaren can drain the whole tank (26 gallons) in 22 minutes at top speed. I wonder how long a 6.9 can last at top speed.

So... (assuming 22 gallon tank as a guess) The Veyron gets about 2 mpg at max velocity. That's actually not bad, lol, considering.... The SLR gets almost 3 mpg at max velocity (I'm guessing 205 mph). ...The 2nd gen C111 with the OM617 would average 15 mpg at approximately the same sustained max speed of the SLR. More power required = more fuel to waste.

Interesting. The SLR gains 33% more mileage over the veyron, which is interesting in that its engine has a max output of 626hp.....while the veyron is 1001....so its about 30ish % less hp.....thus the 1 extra mpg. Thats weird!
Diesels rock. I've thought about how much electricity is required just to keep a dumb gasser going.....on a M103 its like 20 amps @ 12 volts....thats crazy. 9-10amps for the fuel pump(s).....ignition coil/computer/injection is another 7-10 amps......so inefficient. A diesel only needs to keep its injection/lift pump moving...far less energy use/loss.

Fortunately, not even an electric lift-pump in any of my diesels, and my Benz gassers have only ignition and, on my 250s, a couple tiny fuel cut-off solenoids on the carbs - hardly a major electrical drain. Happy Motoring, Mark

WHAT? - actually that's pretty good. I am glad you didn't say I have an HHO, Bedini motor, wind mill powered lawn mower that actually produces more power than it uses.
BUT to answer the FIRST post. I actually cross over into the dark side when I (we) want to go fast - with a 328is.
