'86 300 SDL Glow Plug Strip Fuse Keeps Blowing

Can I assume that one or more of the glow plugs is shorted if 30 amp strip fuse keeps blowing? How difficult is it to locate bad glow plug and replace? Any precautions I should know of?

I am not sure that glow plugs cause a short when they go bad. They usually just blow, expand, and quit working, creating a fully open circuit in that particular glow plug. I would check wiring, and maybe the glow plug controller. It may be that there is a short in the glow plug controller, or glow plug relay. If you want to take your GP's out and check them, they are located on the driver side of the head. Right below the valve cover, there will be what looks like 5 little silver things with nuts on them in a row. with wires coming out of them. Check one at a time, take the wire off and take out the GP, BUT, and I stress this.... Be careful not to just yank it out. If you meet any resistance when pulling out a GP, stop! Get back on here and ask some of the members what to do. You could break the tip off and the tip will fall down into the engine, possibly requiring head removal. Let us know what you find

80 Amp

'could you be putting the 30Amp HVAC Blower fuse into your Pre-Glow Relay?
(That might explain why the fuse blows)
AND both Amperage fuses are 30mm center to center,so Physically they are
interchangeable.
Pre-Glow Relay fuse is 80Amp.

To locate possible bad Glow Plugs go the the Diesel Giant site and follow the trouble shooting proceedures.
Summary: Pull the large connector on the relay. Put 1 probe of the Ohm Meter (meter set at 200 Ohms) to ground and 1 probe into one of the connector sockets. Test each socket. A shorted circut should have very little resistance compared to the good plugs.

Hello Compress Ignite:
Based on you input, went to the ******** this morning and got an 80 amp strip fuse. Old benz cranked right over. Should have remembered Ohm's law. 12 volts / 1 ohm ~ 12 amps X 5 = 60 amps. Thanks for the heads up, otherwise 86 SDL would have been towed + $85/hr just to replace fuse with proper amp rating.
Gratia mille- Thanks a thousand
