battery relocation?
Thanks for the pic Hans - that is exactly what I am trying to do OM617.912 in a w115. The seemed to use the old york AC compressor outta the w115 and everything else looks w123. Wonder if the w123 compressor wouldn't fit or if they merely didn't feel like rerouting the hoses.
I wonder if I'll still have space for a smaller optima battery on the front driver side (where it's supposed to be), with that big ol' washer fluid tank there, it's hard to tell. I may have to move the battery to the back of the engine compartment on the other side of the motor. Here is a pic of the existing battery location and engine layout on the 300d w115 (the pic also shows my homemade veg conversion). |

I didnt realize that the other picture was a conversion. I wonder where the oil supply was routed to?

Oil filter relocation
This thread also deals w/ filter relocation:
Alternative oil filter and oil cooler system Anouther guy did something similar to what I want to do with my w115 with his w108. Check out this web site: http://fatfranz.wordpress.com/category/engine/ although he claims its a w115 300d, it seems to be a w123 300d with a late w123 5 speed he's dropping in. (it's not like my current motor). You can see his filter relocation and other mods. I eventually want to convert it to manual trans also, but don't know if I'll get to it right now. I actually found a rusted out 84' euro spec 240d with a 5 speed I could probably buy. I'd like to drop in but and engine and transmission project right now may leave me broke. I figure it should fit but anyone happen to know if an 84' 240d transmission (it's a one piece aluminum housing transmission) will bolt up to a 1980 w123 300d motor and fit in a 1975 w115? TD Man I do believe...stamping out inappropriate rogue Ts wherever they may be....
I'll look forward to updates on your project Hans, sounds like you have a good plan for it. If the R4 compressor will fit on the lower left side that would be a win. The old Yorks take up so much room, not to mention it would probably interfere with the turbo inlet.

Hey bgk202: Just so you know - you are gonna need the W115 300D motor mounts for the W123 engine. Make them yourself or track them down. I am planning to get a parts car to get them and the intake manifold, pluss whatever else I need.
Rest of the pictures from the german swap. The guy said he would never do it again. He, he. Oldies! |

That York compressor sure made the swap "with AC" much more doable. I never knew they could be rotated and mounted. Nice set-up.
Sure would like to see that oil filter housing and the oil cooler lines. And the connection coming off the block. That is one of the larger engineering pieces of this project I imagine...... And yes, TDT Man snuffs out the rogue "T" wherever he is needed. I just look to the sky for my signal....

Nice turbo engine install in a w115! - Only seen pics of one other - and with that one they swapped the w115 300D (OM617.910) intake manifold onto the turbo engine - but what they used in the pic is a different sort of intake manifold.
From the pics it seems like he kept the w123 IP (it's got the primer pump on it), although it looks like he moved the battery box to the trunk. Although, with a non-turbo w123 300D engine, the battery tray & smaller optima (gel cell) battery may fit on the passenger side (if it won't fit in the original battery location). |

Yes, thanks for the pics Hans, those answer many questions. I see the reason for the modified AC mount, it was to clear the turbo inlet. I too would like to see the detail of the oil filter solution. That and the battery relocation. But it's always hard to get all the details of another persons project. Thanks for the info.

I've been collecting info and stuff regarding this swap since I bought the car more than two years ago.
It's always been my plan to do it some day. Since the restoration finally has started coming to an end, I just can't wait to get started. Inbetween I was even playing with the idea of dropping a 250TD engine from the W124 into it. Considerable more mpg's... But since the 250TDT - for some sick(!!!) reason - only came out in Italy, I went back to the original plan. I want a reliable machine capable of pulling tons if necessary. This is my first car and I use it every day all through the year. I got other hobbies like old motorcycles and model airplanes. In addition to that I want to enter restorations of old sailboats and start flying sailplanes soon. My trailer therefore need a capable mover. In relation to that the 300TDT engine is a excellent choice. I guess the swap itself is pretty straight forward. Yes, its gonna be some trouble, but if you're confident with the angle grinder an such machines, everything is possible. It's a well known conversion, and I think I know about all the critical issues concerning this body. My challenge will most probably be to hook a capable manual trans to it. Automatic transmissions are meant for disabled and retired people. My goal is the mighty Getrag 717450(MB-code)/265(BMW-code). I will try make it happen, and I know about a company that can deliver an adapter plate for it. I got the pictures from a german friend who took them as an infobase for a possible project in the future. What I've published is what I got. At the moment I am just searching for a suitable engine. Yeah! Last edited by HansAA; 03-14-2009 at 02:52 PM. |

Hans, I would love to see pictures of the oil filter setup. It is good to know that the 95x WILL fit but the oil filter seems to be the big question of mine.
Was the York repositioned simply to help with the air intake interference? |

project update
decided to rebuild my 75' w115 300D engine and focus my creative energies on installing a 5spd in this car:
here are some links if anyone is interested or has advise:http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/248926-5-spd-conversion-begun-1975-w115-300d-post2155015.html#post2155015 (trans swap) and yellowish stuff inside cylinders and on pistons (strange yellow stuff on my pistons) |
