BOSCH 3 MINUTE GLOWPLUG RELAY

JUST JOINED THE SITE, AND HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED MY FIRST MERCEDES, 85 300SD TURBO (LOVE IT) BUT HAVE SOME ROUGH COLD IDLE ISSUES.
DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING GOOD OR BAD ABOUT THE BOSCH AFTERGLOW RELAY THAT INCLUDES FOUR PLUGS AND YOU BUY AN EXTRA PLUG FOUR FIVE CYL. MODELS? SOUNDS FISHY TO ME AND AM NOT SURE IF IT IS COMPATABLE WITH MY CAR. SAYS IT STAYS ON FOR UP TO 3 MINUTES?

I have one on a '82 300D. There is nothing "fishy" about it. I don't notice a lot of difference between it and the original style timer.

I bought one for my 1980 300TD and it was NOT compatible, so I sent it back. Don't know if it will work or not for you though.

DUH... SORRY

TANGO... ISN"T THIS POTENTIALLY BAD FOR THE PLUGS??

pawoSD 03-04-2009 11:21 PM

THE GLOWPLUG RELAY WILL WORK FINE ON AN '85 300SD. I HAVE HAD ONE IN MY 82 FOR YEARS WITH GOOD RESULTS.

IT DOES NOT HURT THE GLOWPLUGS, I'VE HAD MY CURRENT SET IN FOR ABOUT 2.5 YEARS WITH NO FAILURES.

:D

It would stand to reason that the additional cycle time would reduce the service life of the plugs. However, the money saved by buying the Bosch relay will pay for several sets of glow plugs.

My guess is he is like me. I had no experience on any sort of chat room or ect. before posting on this forum; and I did not know that using all Upper Case on the internet ment you were shouting. I just thought it was easier to read.

CADMAN, welcome to the Forum :).

when you type in upper case, it is refered to yelling.

From what I have read, the Fast Glow relay uses the Bosh Duraterm plugs that are designed to stay on longer. It will help more so in the very cold areas of the country in the deepest darkest part of winter. they stay on three minutes or so after the engine starts, helps to get things up to operating temp quicker and cut down on smoke.
