Upper oil pan removal in J/Y?

I want to remove the upper oil pan off a 5 cyl turbodiesel (you know W123 and early W126) off a car in the yard to do some messing around with. What is the best way to do it? Do I have to lift the engine or I can walk it out?

You are going to have to pull the engine. There is no way to pull the upper pan with the engine installed .

That is what Iam doing today, fun, fun, fun . But not in the JY.

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.

the upper pan can slide out from under the engine with it still in the bay - its in the manual.

Most here have much difficulty doing it and you need to raise the engine substantially. The only thing in your way is the cross-member below the pan.. perhaps in a JY it would easier to cut that than lift the engine.

Well wrong again, anything is possible with enough determination.

You did say remove it while installed. now put it back in while still installed in the recieving engine.

I have not attempted it. I would imagine removing the engine is definitely easier. In a JY.. I don't know how that would fly.

The junkyards should have a mobile A-Frame crane or offer forklift assistance.

They must have something to lift with if they expect to sell engines to people besides this guy:
