Upper oil pan removal in J/Y?
I want to remove the upper oil pan off a 5 cyl turbodiesel (you know W123 and early W126) off a car in the yard to do some messing around with. What is the best way to do it? Do I have to lift the engine or I can walk it out?

You are going to have to pull the engine. There is no way to pull the upper pan with the engine installed .
That is what Iam doing today, fun, fun, fun . But not in the JY. Charlie

the upper pan can slide out from under the engine with it still in the bay - its in the manual.
Most here have much difficulty doing it and you need to raise the engine substantially. The only thing in your way is the cross-member below the pan.. perhaps in a JY it would easier to cut that than lift the engine. |

Well wrong again, anything is possible with enough determination.
You did say remove it while installed. now put it back in while still installed in the recieving engine. Charlie

I have not attempted it. I would imagine removing the engine is definitely easier. In a JY.. I don't know how that would fly.
he'll be cursing all day. |

The junkyards should have a mobile A-Frame crane or offer forklift assistance.
They must have something to lift with if they expect to sell engines to people besides this guy: |
