I am putting my head back together and have run into a bit of a problem with the timing. I ought to have marked the washer with the notch, because as I moved the camshaft back onto the engine it fell off, and now I'm not sure if it's 180 degrees off or not. The engine is at TDC, but after turning it a bit it appears the No. 3 piston contacts the intake valve. Do I have it 180 degrees off? Just wanted to ask before taking things apart again.

Do you have 2 notches on the washer that allow it to be put on the wrong way?

take note of the relationship between the first cam lobe and the notch on the washer, it is the same for 61x engines. How similar is this engine to the 300d you previously owned?

That's what I needed to know, I wasn't sure what the correct position of the washer was in relation to the camshaft.

As for similarity, it's like a baby version of my old 617.952, with one less of everything.

New question...

The manual is fairly confusing about how to set initial timing. It says for assembly, it's fine just to line up the marks. Does that mean set the engine to 0 on the crank and line up the cam notch? or is it +13 degrees on the crank since I have a used chain?

on the 61x engines a chain should never be allowed to run if it 13* stretched.

with a brand new chain you match the marks @ zero. There should be no way to put the chain incorrectly if you do so. It would require at least 18* of difference b/w the crank and the cam marks.
