Before you trash the engine, does it turn over with the head off? I think I read where it does not. I would check the flex plate. My 300SD broke the flex plate and the engine would only turn about 200 degrees and then hit a hard stop where the broken piece of flex plate would jam up on the rest of the plate.

You MIGHT not need an engine...

It turns over all the way when I loosen the head bolts just enough to allow the protruding pistons to push the head up off the block.

What part of the Head are the pistons hitting? Or, is it hitting the Head Gasket first?

not quite sure actually. shoudl the head gasket cylinder sealing ring fit around the piston?
