It`s really not a good idea pouring fuel from, the dirty filter to the clean one. You will notice that there are a row of holes around the top of the filter and one large hole in the center.

Now Iam not out at the car to re orientate my self which way the fuel flows in and out of the filter. lets assume it flows in from the small holes and out the large one to the IP.

Now when you pour the fuel out of the old into the new filter. how do you separate dirty from clean fuel. how do you only pour from the large hole w/o it coming out of the small holes?

Also with that kind of thinking, it would be a good idea to pour oil out of the old oil filter to the new to pre fill it. after all it would be clean coming out of the center hole there also?

Now when changing the spin on filter, just fill it to the top and screw it on. you can use ATF, Diesel purge, Diesel. I usually don`t have problems restarting when I change them.
I fill the new filter and have it ready to install before I remove the old one.
pull off the old, screw one the new, and start.

update: I cracked/loosened the injector lines on two of the injectors. Do I have to crank it until fuel comes out of the lines and then re-tighten them? Thanks for all the help

I always crack them 1 at a time, and crank till I get fuel at
each one. Then glow and try to start.

Obviously one wouldn't wish to introduce used oil into a fresh oil change, however, the diesel is not going to be circulating in the engine for the next 3000 miles, it will be so much exhaust in a couple miles.
Quite possibly my fuel system is cleaner than what you have experienced.
First filter change I poured the fuel from the filter into a clear plastic container (quart sized) I allowed it it sit for about 15 minutes, then when I examined it, There was no sediment or cloudy/separation issues. I also cut the old filter apart, and the filter element was clean. Clean enough where I could not really tell which way the fuel traveled. Certainly there was so sediment or particles. I guess it just seemed like the cleanest diesel I had available, as it had at least gone through the primary, and getting diesel from my can could be far worse. Using diesel purge or ATF seems like it would just add cost to the filter change. Maybe I'll get that plastic cup out for the next one, now that I am imagining all the bad things that could happen.

x2 on cracking one injector at a time. I tried doing all four on my machine once, and it didn't work at all after MANY cranks, tried one at a time and was done in 10 minutes

If you remove your filter and spray wd 40 directly into the intake your car will run on it as long as you spray. This will get it started and you can keep spraying until the system is bled and you can stop spraying.

Save the time and do all five at once..........

..........or, fill the secondary to overflowing just prior to bolting it up. Absolutely no bleeding of air required.

I had to get a new battery. Ok, crack all injector lines, crank until fuel comes out, re-tighten lines. And that should do it. I'm off to get a new battery. Unfortunately, this is my only car so I'm on foot. Thanks again for all the help.

how do you get the primer to pump? Is there a handle or something to pull out?

Its threaded in so turn it CCW untill it pulls out and start pumping. When done pumping, push it back down and tighten.

Some engines (OM602, for example) don't have a manual pump. No choice on these but to use the starter.
