LeSabre for 300SD

To the dismay of many, I joined the small clique of forum members who have purchased Buicks in the past couple of years.

I damaged my SD's transmission last May and my wife convinced me that one hobby car (240D) was enough. So, I purchased a LeSabre the Saturday after damaging the Mercede's tranny.

I have skillfully procrastinated selling the 300SD for many, many months.

During this time I have been driving my '05 LeSabre. Cold a/c, roomy, comfortable, runs on regular gas, and XM/Sirus radio. Love the radio's political shows, Live MLB games and the Grateful Dead channel.

Nice car, dull, and she doesn't communicate with the road the way the SD did. Plus the SD's sunroof rocked.

So, I call my mechanic Pierre today to ask him if he is going to the Central Florida GTG and long story short he introduces me to David XXXXXX. A very nice guy bitten by the Mercedes diesel bug and David buy's the 81 'SD with full and open disclosure of the transmission problem.

After four years and trips as far west as Palm Desert, Cailif. and as far east as Brunswick, Maine the car is gone.

But I am comforted my the fact that David gives the impression that he will be an excellent caregiver and that the car's maintenance and repair will be performed by Pierre Hedary. And by the fact that I still own one diesel Benz.

Buicks are decent rides.

Pierre worked on my W124 before it made the journey to Texas. Hes a superb mechanic.

Heres my 84 Brougham Limited with 53K miles.

I'm getting all misty eyed looking at that car. Reminds me of my youth. Is that a diesel?

Buick, the official car of the blue hair...........

They can be a very very low mileage and pampered car since so many elderly folks drive them, and pay dearly and happily to keep them ship shape.

Be glad your Buick is a gasser.
GM has NEVER made a diesel engine.
Oh sure they've converted the small block to run on diesel,
but actually designed a diesel, nope.
The 6.5 is an ungodly POS, only thing worse is a 6.2

We've had a good number of GM Diesels While the original 5.7L diesel was not a convert of a gasser exactly and not a small block chevy. They were based off of 5.7L Oldsmobile arkitecture. The parts are much heavier duty VS. gasser 5.7's. That said, yes the early ones were pretty crappy, the had issues with bad castings, overheat, and broken head bolts which seemed as a bad head or gasket but an easy fix. Now the later production 5.7L's were fine but the damage to there reputation was done. The Olds racer crowd loves the diesels to built super stout motors with using gasser heads and etc.

The 6.2L and 6.5 and 6.5TD are just fine IMO. While not powerhouses the serve there place well. I myself have had a few 6.2's and they were great trucks. We have one now with over 300K miles and still runs great. There was also a N/A 6.5, just a bigger 6.2L and also a fine motor. Now the 6.5TD i dont have much experiance with. They do have some common injection/electronic bugs but produce decent power and reliability. That said, show me an engine that was perfect outta the gate??? Theres always gonna be begining issues.

The Duramax is a piece of art! NOT built by Isuzu but a design colaboration of GM owned Isuzu and GM engineering and built and made here in the US. Since its introduction, it has been the most powerful diesel in its class since day one! My other ride is a tuned duramax and its a monster making an estimated 500hp and prolly round 600hp with the meth/water on and this 6200LB HD truck gets 20mpg!

So I happen to like GM diesels!

Skippy~ As for perception: Drive what you like and can afford. Those who don't like it can supply vacuum to one of your components. LOL

If you need parts, I have some!

I guess if 369 TSB's for an 08 truck is considered good, then the Duramax rocks. (that is more than 1 TSB per day)

Your 03 has 1012 TSB's Not what I'm looking for

Haha actually, I owned a 1997 6.5L in a K3500 I bought it with 232,000 and put 60,000 miles on it. It never missed a beat at all, the truck was completely stock xcept the K&N. The most ironic part is that I bought it from a self-employed logger and he took okay care of it nothing too special.

Also My friend has a 04 chevy K2500 with the allison + duramax. His stock truck has 289,000 miles on it. He drives a lot of highway miles. His truck is all stock too. He isn't nice to it either. Chris owns some mobile cranes, He has 2 50 tons and a 75 ton. He is constantly throwing riggin' in the back and piling on the miles.

But yes you are right the 80's GM diesels were designed by DETROIT DIESEL. The Duramax engine is also an association engine part Isuzu part GM.

With that being said I wanted to add my 2 cents worth. I think GM diesels in the 80's were undisirable but . If you take care of something; you will have better luck than if you don't treat it nicely

talk about pointing out the obvious haha
